The notion of "half fire, half ice" was recently introduced to describe an exotic macroscopic ground-state degeneracy emerging in a ferrimagnet under the critical magnetic field, in which the "hot" spins are fully disordered on the sublattice with smaller magnetic moments and the "cold" spins are fully ordered on the sublattice with larger magnetic moments. Here, we further point out that this state has a twin named "half ice, half fire" in which the hot and cold spins switch positions. The new state is an excited state-thus hidden in the ground-state phase diagram-and is robust with respect to the interactions that destroy the half-fire, half-ice state.

In this work, we report and analyze a high operating temperature (HOT) InAsSb nBn mid-wave infrared (MWIR) focal plane array (FPA) and single element photodetectors with AlAs/AlSb superlattices as the electron barrier. Under an applied bias of -350 mV, the nBn photodetectors demonstrate a dark current density of 2.

Sleep deprivation has been associated with impaired thermoregulatory function. However, whether these impairments translate to changes in whole-body heat exchange during exercise-heat stress remains unknown. Therefore, following either a night of normal sleep or 24 h of sleep deprivation, 10 young men (mean (SD): 23 (3) years) completed three 30-min bouts of semi-recumbent cycling at increasing fixed rates of metabolic heat production (150, 200, 250 W/m), each separated by a 15-min rest in dry heat (40 °C, ~ 13% relative humidity).

Introduction: Scalds account for 40 % of burn injuries in developed countries, with a subset occurring during caregiving activities, particularly when gloves are worn. Gloves, a standard precaution against infection and body fluid exposure, may impair sensory feedback critical for detecting temperature changes, potentially increasing the risk of burns during personal care tasks.
Methods: This study investigated the impact of glove use on heat perception.

Passive radiative cooling has recently gained significant attention as a highly promising technology that offers a zero-energy and electricity-free solution to tackle the pressing issue of global warming. Nevertheless, research efforts have predominantly focused on enhancing daytime and hot-day radiative cooling efficacy, often neglecting the potential downsides associated with excessive cooling and the consequent increased heating expenses during cold nights and winter days. Herein, we demonstrate a micro-nanostructured engineered composite film that synergistically integrates room-temperature adaptive silica-shell/oil-core phase change microcapsules (S-PCMs) with commercially available cellulose fibers.
