Despite evidence from anatomy, behavior and genomics indicating that the sense of smell in turtles is important, our understanding of chemical communication in this group is still rudimentary. Our aim was to describe the microanatomy of mental glands (MGs) in a freshwater turtle, (Geoemydidae), and to assess the chemical composition of their secretions with respect to variation among individuals and between sexes. MGs are paired sac-like organs on the gular region of the neck and are dimorphic in this species with males having fully functional holocrine glands while those of females appear non-secretory and vestigial.

The development of the murine middle ear was monitored both qualitatively and morphometrically by scanning electron microscopy from the 19th gestational day to the adult stage. At birth, the middle ear was less well developed than the inner ear. The tympanic membrane (TM) was obscured by occlusion of the external auditory canal.

Purpose: The accessory cardiac bronchus is a rare congenital anomaly of the tracheobronchial tree that arises from the medial wall of the bronchus intermedius. This report documents the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of this anomaly.

The plasticity of cervical primary afferents has been investigated in young adult cats in which the trigeminal root, together with most of the ganglion, had been excised via a new approach to these structures during the first week after birth. Once degeneration debris had disappeared, bilateral ganglionectomies of the upper three cervical dorsal roots were done in five animals and the IXth and Xth roots transected on the side of the chronic trigeminal denervation in one instance; the degeneration pattern on the chronically denervated side was compared to that on the normal side. There was mild evidence of increased degeneration of the cervical afferents in the C1 segment and in the medulla (subnucleus interpolaris of V) on the chronically denervated side.
