Differences in Blood and Cerebrospinal Fluid Between Parkinson's Disease and Related Diseases.

Cell Mol Neurobiol

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

It is difficult to distinguish Parkinson's disease (PD) in the early stage from those of various disorders including atypical Parkinson's syndrome (APS), vascular parkinsonism (VP), and even essential tremor (ET), because of the overlap of symptoms. Other, more challenging problems will arise when Parkinson's disease develops into Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) in the middle and late stages. At this time, the differential diagnosis of PDD and DLB becomes thorny.

Effects of live yeast on milk yield, feed efficiency, methane emissions and fertility of high-yielding dairy cows.

Live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) products have the potential to increase milk yield of dairy cows in early lactation by improving rumen fermentation. Greater milk yields, however, are sometimes associated with poorer reproductive performance. This study aimed to assess the effect of a live yeast supplement on milk yield, methane emissions and reproduction indicators in high-yielding dairy cows.

Chronic Manganese Neuro-Toxicity in a Patient With Cirrhosis and the Role of Iron-Deficiency Anaemia.

Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Redhill, GBR.

Patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) are prone to complications associated with impaired liver functioning. This coupled with iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) can predispose them to multiple comorbidities. We present an interesting case of a 69-year-old woman with a background history of liver cirrhosis due to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) with frequent travels to Bangladesh, a southeast Asian country known for having high levels of manganese (Mn) in water for domestic use.

Calcifying Aponeurotic Fibroma in the Deep Space of the Hand.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

December 2024

From the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Children's National Hospital, Washington, DC.

Article Synopsis
  • Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a rare tumor affecting the upper extremities, particularly challenging when it involves deep spaces of the hand.
  • A case study discusses a 9-year-old girl with a growing mass on her palm, diagnosed later due to its deep location and lack of symptoms, which led to a larger than normal size.
  • The girl underwent a careful surgical procedure to remove the tumor while preserving surrounding structures, and at her 1-year follow-up, there were no signs of recurrence.

Disorders affecting the neurological and musculoskeletal systems represent international health priorities. A significant impediment to progress in trials of new therapies is the absence of responsive, objective, and valid outcome measures sensitive to early disease changes. A key finding in individuals with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders is the compositional changes to muscles, evinced by the expression of fatty infiltrates.
