Molecular assembly of weakly pi-stacking core-substituted naphthalene diimides (cNDIs) requires the participation of strong side-group interactions. Spatial confinement within a micellar core leads to locally elevated concentrations and reduced entropy that drives a rapid aggregation, often followed by a slower aggregate reorganization. Fast aggregation kinetics leads to self-sorting of aggregates.

Drug loading capacity is a crucial character of nano-scaled drug carriers to achieve high quality pharmaceutical preparations. However, efficient encapsulation of water-soluble small molecular drugs still faces large obstacles in many cases. Herein, we designed a novel supramolecular delivery system constructed by poly(β-cyclodextrin) containing benzoic acid groups (PCD-PA) and adamantyl terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-AD) to provide multiple intermolecular interactions for competent loading of water-soluble small-molecular drugs.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), an emerging cancer treatment modality, uses multivalent metal elements to convert endogenous hydrogen peroxide (HO) to toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via a Fenton or Fenton-like reaction, thus eliciting oxidative damage of cancer cells. However, the antitumor potency of CDT is largely limited by the high glutathione (GSH) concentration and low catalytic efficiency in the tumor sites. The combination of CDT with chemotherapy provides a promising strategy to overcome these limitations.

The excessive accumulation of Cd and Zn in soil poisons crops and threatens food safety. In this study, KMnO-hematite modified biochar (MnFeB) was developed and applied to remediate weakly alkaline Cd-Zn contaminated soil, and the heavy metal immobilization effect, plant growth, and metal ion uptake of foxtail millet were studied. MnFeB application reduced the phytotoxicity of soil heavy metals; bioavailable acid-soluble Cd and Zn were reduced by 57.

All-small-molecule organic solar cells with good batch-to-batch reproducibility combined with non-halogen solvent processing show great potential for commercialization. However, non-halogen solvent processing of all-small-molecule organic solar cells are rarely reported and its power conversion efficiencies are very difficult to improve. Herein, we designed and synthesized a small molecule donor BM-ClEH that can take advantage of strong aggregation property induced by intramolecular chlorine-sulfur non-covalent interaction to improve molecular pre-aggregation in tetrahydrofuran and corresponding micromorphology after film formation.

Aromatic π-stacking is a weakly attractive, noncovalent interaction often found in biological macromolecules and synthetic supramolecular chemistry. The weak nondirectional nature of π-stacking can present challenges in the design of materials owing to their weak, nondirectional nature. However, when aromatic π-systems contain an unpaired electron, stronger attraction involving face-to-face π-orbital overlap is possible, resulting in covalent so-called "pancake" bonds.
