Topology Optimisation of Wideband Coaxial-to-Waveguide Transitions.

To maximize the matching between a coaxial cable and rectangular waveguides, we present a computational topology optimisation approach that decides for each point in a given domain whether to hold a good conductor or a good dielectric. The conductivity is determined by a gradient-based optimisation method that relies on finite-difference time-domain solutions to the 3D Maxwell's equations. Unlike previously reported results in the literature for this kind of problems, our design algorithm can efficiently handle tens of thousands of design variables that can allow novel conceptual waveguide designs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by presenting optimised transitions with reflection coefficients lower than -15 dB over more than a 60% bandwidth, both for right-angle and end-launcher configurations. The performance of the proposed transitions is cross-verified with a commercial software, and one design case is validated experimentally.

In cases of large mandibular continuity defects resulting from malignancy resection, the current standard of care involves using patient-specific/custom titanium reconstruction plates along with autogenous grafts (fibula, scapula, or iliac crest segments). However, when grafts are not feasible or desired, only the reconstruction plate is used to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, metal osteosynthesis and reconstruction plates, including titanium, exhibit adverse effects such as stress-shielding and limitations in accurate postoperative irradiation (especially with proton-beam therapy).

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei possesses a large family of transmembrane receptor-like adenylate cyclases (RACs), primarily located to the flagellar surface and involved in sensing of the extracellular environment. RACs exhibit a conserved topology characterized by a large N-terminal extracellular moiety harbouring two Venus Flytrap (VFT) bilobate structures separated from an intracellular catalytic domain by a single transmembrane helix. RAC activation, which typically occurs under mild acid stress, requires the dimerization of the intracellular catalytic domain.
