The value of BAL in three groups of diseases (sarcoidosis, lung fibrosis, inflammatory diseases of the bronchi) compared with a control group is described. The cellular components and total protein and glycoprotein as well as electrolyts and angiotension-converting enzyme were examined. In patients with sarcoidosis a higher retention of sodium ions was stated. ACE in BAL was without any hint to the activity of the disease. But for glycoproteins a higher permeability was proved. In several fractions of the BAL fluid were differences according to all examined parameters.

Proteomic Insight Into Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis Pathways.

Proteomics

January 2025

Neuroregeneration and Stem Cell Programs, Institute for Cell Engineering, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia, but the pathogenesis mechanism is still elusive. Advances in proteomics have uncovered key molecular mechanisms underlying AD, revealing a complex network of dysregulated pathways, including amyloid metabolism, tau pathology, apolipoprotein E (APOE), protein degradation, neuroinflammation, RNA splicing, metabolic dysregulation, and cognitive resilience. This review examines recent proteomic findings from AD brain tissues and biological fluids, highlighting potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

New insights into the role of complement system in colorectal cancer (Review).

Key Laboratory of Immune Microenvironment and Inflammatory Disease Research in Universities of Shandong Province, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong Second Medical University, Weifang, Shandong 261053, P.R. China.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. With the growing understanding of immune regulation in tumors, the complement system has been recognized as a key regulator of tumor immunity. Traditionally, the complement cascade, considered an evolutionarily conserved defense mechanism against invading pathogens, has been viewed as a crucial inhibitor of tumor progression.

Disseminated tuberculosis masquerading as a psychiatric illness-A case report.

J Family Med Prim Care

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Puncak Alam, Malaysia, Asia.

Unlabelled: Tuberculosis (TB) can affect any organ, and at times more than one organ in any sequence, in which case it is referred to as disseminated tuberculosis (DTB). We report a patient who presented primarily for psychiatric symptoms of three months' duration, which later turned out to be a case of DTB involving the central nervous system as well as the spine and lungs.

Case Presentation: An elderly lady with subacute onset and worsening behavioural changes of three months' duration was referred for exclusion of organic brain disease.

Introduction: While male breast carcinoma is a relatively uncommon occurrence, its incidence is on the rise, potentially attributed to sporadic pathophysiological mechanisms, primarily involving hormonal imbalances. Invasive apocrine carcinoma represents a small fraction of global breast malignancies, with limited instances reported among male patients in the literature. The clinical presentation of an apocrine breast carcinoma closely resembles that of other breast cancer subtypes, as it is most often described as a solitary ulcerative nodular lesion occupying a retro-areolar region of the breast.

Cell-laden, scaffold-based tissue engineering methods have been successfully utilized for the treatment of bone fractures. In such methods, the rate of scaffold biodegradation, transport of nutrients, and removal of cell metabolic wastes are critical fluid-dynamics factors, affecting tissue regeneration. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify the underlying material transport mechanisms associated with stem cell-driven, scaffold-based bone tissue regeneration.
