Alternative mass reference standards for direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry.

Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom

JEOL USA, Inc., 11 Dearborn Rd., Peabody, MA, 01960, USA.

Published: May 2016

Rationale: Mass spectra were acquired with the Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART®) ion source for an amine-terminated polyether used as positive-ion mass reference standards and for several fluorinated materials commonly used as negative-ion reference standards for mass spectrometry.

Methods: A commercial time-of-flight mass spectrometer equipped with a DART ion source was used for all measurements. Mass reference standards deposited onto the sealed end of a glass melting point tube were suspended in the DART gas stream for analysis.

Results: A polyetheramine (Jeffamine® M-600) produced intense peaks corresponding to protonated molecules. Perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA), and perfluorotripentylamine, gave useful reference spectra for different m/z ranges. DART mass spectra of Ultramark 1621® resembled those previously reported for Fast Atom Bombardment (FAB) and Electrospray Ionization (ESI). Fomblin®Y, a fluorinated ether, was the most useful negative-ion reference standard of the materials tested. The material is commercially available, inexpensive, and provides reference peaks covering the m/z range 85 to >3000.

Conclusions: Jeffamine-M600 was found to be a convenient alternative to polyethers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) for DART positive-ion mass calibration. Fomblin Y was suitable for use as a negative-ion reference standard. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Sequential testing with Xpert MTB/RIF assay for diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai University Hospital.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, 110 Intavaroros Rd., Muaeng, Chiang Mai, 50200, Thailand.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for reducing morbidity and mortality in tuberculous meningitis (TBM). This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the Xpert MTB/RIF assay for the diagnosis of TBM in patients with subacute lymphocytic meningitis. This cross-sectional study included 65 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai University Hospital, Thailand, between January 2015 and March 2016.

Objectives: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of ULDCT to CXR for detecting non-traumatic pulmonary diseases at the emergency department (ED) and to study diagnostic confidence levels.

Methods: Secondary analysis of the prospective OPTIMACT trial (2418 ED participants randomly allocated to ULDCT or CXR). Diagnoses at imaging at the ED were compared to the reference diagnosis on day 28.

Risk factors associated with higher WHO grade in meningiomas: a multicentric study of 552 skull base meningiomas.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery and Neurooncology, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and Military University Hospital, U Vojenske nemocnice 1200, Prague, 169 02, Czech Republic.

The histological grade is crucial for therapeutic management, and its reliable preoperative detection can significantly influence treatment approach. Lacking established risk factors, this study identifies preoperative predictors of high-grade skull base meningiomas and discusses the implications of non-invasive detection. A multicentric study was conducted on 552 patients with skull base meningiomas who underwent primary surgical resection between 2014 and 2019.

Currently Available Radiology-Specific Reporting Guidelines.

Acad Radiol

January 2025

Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts (O.M.H.N., J.V.R.); Department of Radiology, Beth Israel Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts (O.M.H.N., J.V.R.).

The aim of this paper is to contextualize and review reporting guidelines available at the EQUATOR Network that are most relevant to radiology-specific investigations. Eight EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines for the clinical area of radiology, not including the subspecialized areas of imaging of the cardiovascular, neurologic, and oncologic diseases are reviewed and discussed. The reporting guidelines are for diagnostic and therapeutic clinical research.
