N-vinylpyrrolidone-N(2-hydroxy) acrylamide copolymer-modified porous glass was studied as a support for gel permeation chromatography. Influenza, Sendai, fowl plague viruses and rota-viruses were purified by chromatography on the support. As compared with Sepharose 4B the support shows better hydrodynamic properties and yields higher amounts of purified viruses. The support can be also applied to the t-RNA and ribosomes separation.

There are great challenges in the field of natural product isolation and purification and in the pharmacological study of oligosaccharide monomers. And these isolation and purification processes are still universal problems in the study of natural products (NPs), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), omics, etc. The same polymer-modified materials designed for the special separation of oligosaccharides, named Sil-epoxy-PEI and Sil-chloropropyl-PEI, were synthesized via two different methods and characterized by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy spectrum analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, zeta potential as well as surface area analysis, etc.

Article Synopsis
  • A series of carbon-based nanocomposites were created by heating a resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer with metal oxide/silica nanocomposites, leading to different structural properties depending on the metal used (Mg, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn).
  • The synthesized materials exhibited mesoporous structures and showed significant variations in porosity and surface area based on the metal fillers, with nickel and copper enhancing graphitization and order.
  • The resulting composites demonstrated effective adsorption capabilities for pollutants like p-chlorophenol and p-nitrophenol from water, highlighting their potential applications in environmental remediation.

Precise stepwise recovery of platinum group metals from high-level liquid wastes based on SDB polymer-modified SiO.

School of Nuclear Science and Technology, University of South China, 28 Changsheng West Road, Hengyang 421001, P.R. China.

Accurate separation and efficient recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs, mainly Ru, Rh and Pd) from high level liquid waste (HLLW) is a good choice for clean production and sustainable development of nuclear energy. Herein a novel SDB polymer modified silica-based amine-functionalized composite (dNbpy/SiO-P) was synthesized for the separation and recovery of PGMs. Laser particle size analysis and BET results clarified the regular spherical and highly interconnected mesoporous structure of dNbpy/SiO-P which is critical for the separation of PGMs.

Developing magnetic functionalized dendritic fibrous mesoporous silica as advanced adsorbent for quaternary ammonium alkaloids.

Mikrochim Acta

November 2023

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250012, China.

A novel π-conjugated polymer-modified magnetic dendritic fibrous mesoporous silica adsorbent (MB@KCC-1@π-CP) is reported for the accurate determination of quaternary ammonium alkaloids (QAAs) in complex body fluid matrices. It is demonstrated that the magnetic dendritic fibrous mesoporous silica (MB@KCC-1) is an excellent carrier combining magnetism, high specific surface area, unique hierarchical pore structure, and fast mass transfer rate. The π-conjugated polymer (π-CP) can efficiently retain QAAs (berberine, coptisine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine) by multiple interactions.

On-column modification for the creation of temperature-responsive stationary phases.

Anal Chim Acta

Separation Science Group, Department of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry, Krijgslaan 281, Ghent, Belgium. Electronic address:

Temperature-responsive liquid chromatography (TRLC) offers an alternative for retention and selectivity optimisation in HPLC. This approach thereby exploits temperature gradients on stimuli-responsive stationary phases and forfeits the necessity for solvent gradients, allowing analyses to be performed using aqueous mobile phases. Consequently, it can be employed as a green alternative to reversed-phase separations.
