Objectives: Despite restrictions, mercury continues to pose a health concern. Mercury has the ability to deposit in most parts of the body and can cause a wide range of unspecific symptoms leading to diagnostic mistakes.
Methods And Results: We report the case of severe mercury vapour poisoning after occupational exposure in a chloralkali plant worker that resulted in life-threatening respiratory failure, pneumomediastinum and quadriparesis.
Conclusions: Prolonged mechanical ventilation and treatment with penicillamine and spironolactone was used with successful outcome.

Mercury (Hg) determination in marine sediment is an analytical challenge due to the toxicity of this element even at low concentrations (up to 130 μg kg in marine sediments) and complex matrices. Therefore, it is necessary to use analytical techniques that have high sensitivity, selectivity, and low limits of quantification (LoQ). In this study, two methods that require sample treatment and one method with direct sampling were studied.

Rationale: Among 3 forms of mercury, elemental mercury vapor presents the highest threat due to its potential to cause acute pneumonitis. The management of acute mercury vapor poisoning remains unclear, particularly in acute lung injury. We present a case of mercury vapor poisoning resulting from the heating of cinnabar, successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids and chelation therapy, and follow-up over 6 months.

Various studies report pollutant levels in the environment to raise awareness and call for government intervention to protect the environment and public health. However, inconsistent findings across studies complicate environmental actions and policy-making processes in many countries. Geita region in Tanzania is one of the areas with a high focus on metal pollution problems emanating from artisanal, small-scale, and industrial mining operations.

Mercury is a toxic trace metal found in seafood products owing to its bioaccumulative and ubiquitous nature. Seafood and fish are frequently consumed, being necessary to assess its human health risk. Accordingly, this study quantified total mercury in samples of canned tuna in water from supermarkets in the Metropolitan District of Quito in Ecuador, in order to ensure that Hg content is within the maximum limits stablished in national and international regulations.
