We study the rectified transport of underdamped active noninteracting particles in an asymmetric periodic potential. It is found that the ratchet effect of active noninteracting particles occurs in a single direction (along the easy direction of the substrate asymmetry) in the overdamped limit. However, when the inertia is considered, it is possible to observe reversals of the ratchet effect, where the motion is along the hard direction of the substrate asymmetry. By changing the friction coefficient or the self-propulsion force, the average velocity can change its direction several times. Therefore, by suitably tailoring the parameters, underdamped active particles with different self-propulsion forces can move in different directions and can be separated.

Collective motion of energy depot active disks.

In the present work we have studied collectives of active disks with an energy depot, moving in the two-dimensional plane and interacting an excluded volume. The energy depot accounts for the extraction of energy taking place at the level of each particle in order to perform self-propulsion, included in an underdamped Langevin dynamics. We show that this model undergoes a flocking transition, exhibiting some of the key features of the Vicsek model, namely, band formation and giant number fluctuations.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have developed approximate methods to study exciton transport in molecular aggregates influenced by structured environments, moving beyond basic models that often become complex and hard to manage.
  • They introduced a self-consistent Born approximation to better accommodate exciton-environment interactions and improve calculations of energy transfer dynamics in these systems.
  • Their findings indicate that this new approach aligns well with more comprehensive models across various conditions, suggesting it effectively describes exciton behavior even in complex scenarios like the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex.

We study the nonequilibrium stationary state of a one-dimensional inertial run-and-tumble particle (IRTP) trapped in a harmonic potential. We find that the presence of inertia leads to two distinct dynamical scenarios, namely, overdamped and underdamped, characterized by the relative strength of the viscous and the trap timescales. We also find that inertial nature of the active dynamics leads to the particle being confined in specific regions of the phase plane in the overdamped and underdamped cases, which we compute analytically.

The fluctuation-dissipation relation holds for a macroscopic tracer in an active bath.

The fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) links thermal fluctuations and dissipation at thermal equilibrium through temperature. Extending it beyond equilibrium conditions in pursuit of broadening thermodynamics is often feasible, albeit with system-dependent specific conditions. We demonstrate experimentally that a generalized FDR holds for a harmonically trapped tracer colliding with self-propelled walkers.

Active matter spans a wide range of time and length scales, from groups of cells and synthetic self-propelled colloids to schools of fish and flocks of birds. The theoretical framework describing these systems has shown tremendous success in finding universal phenomenology. However, further progress is often burdened by the difficulty of determining forces controlling the dynamics of individual elements within each system.
