A new scenario for the thermalization process of adsorbates at solid surfaces is proposed. The scenario is based on the existence of an electric dipole layer in which the electron wavefunctions extend over the positive ions, creating a strong local electric field which drags the electrons into the solid interior and repels the positive ions. During adsorption the electrons tunnel into the solid interior, conveying the excess energy. The positive ions are retarded by the field, losing the excess kinetic energy, and are located smoothly into the adsorption sites. In such a scheme, the excess energy is not dissipated locally, avoiding melting or the creation of defects which is in accordance with experiments. The scenario is supported by ab initio calculation results, including density function theory of the slabs representing the AlN surface and the Schrodinger equation for the time evolution of hydrogen-like atoms at the solid surface.

Given the fluctuating availability of natural lighting throughout the year, supplemental light is frequently employed to maintain the optimal daily light integral (DLI) levels necessary for adequate plant growth. However, the use of supplemental light translates into higher operational costs. Recent reports suggest that plants can tolerate a day with low DLI following exposure to a day with high DLI from natural light.
In this study, ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of oxygen-containing polycarbonate (PC) was conducted to prepare carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and H-rich syngas. This study examined the influence of the active metal components (Ni and Fe), catalyst pre-reduction, and pre-deoxygenation of pyrolysis volatiles on the catalytic performance and mechanism. Results show that the reductive constituents in pyrolysis volatiles make it difficult to reduce the Fe oxides, thus hindering the CNTs growth on Fe catalysts, compared to Ni catalysts.
Despite the importance of the effect of subnanoscale roughness on contact line behavior, it is difficult to directly observe the local behavior of contact lines at the micro- and nanoscale, leaving significant gaps in our current understanding. In this research, we investigate contact line motions and their relationship with nanoscale surface topography using coherence scanning interferometry. Our experiments were conducted on the substrates with different wettability without changing nanoscale surface topography.
