An analysis of the crop contents of the poultry shaft louse, indicates that 67 % of adult males and 72 % of the adult females examined carried red content compatible to host blood, along with feather barbules. The percentage of nymphal instars carrying red content in the crop was quite low. On the basis of crop contents the louse does not seem to harbor any triturating agent and is also not involved in cannibalism or predation. SEM studies on the ventral side of head do not indicate the presence of any pointed structure which can be used to pierce the skin.

Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) outbreaks have caused significant economic losses in the Chinese poultry industry since 2015. The relationships among viral structural proteins in infected hosts are relatively unknown. To explore the role of different parts of the fiber-1 protein in FAdV-4-infected hosts, we truncated fiber-1 into fiber-1-Δ1 (73-205 aa) and fiber-1-Δ2 (211-412 aa), constructed pEF1α-HA-fiber-1-Δ1 and pEF1α-HA-fiber-1-Δ2 and then transfected them into leghorn male hepatocyte (LMH) cells.

Chromosome-level genome of the poultry shaft louse Menopon gallinae provides insight into the host-switching and adaptive evolution of parasitic lice.

Gigascience

Department of Entomology and MOA Key Lab of Pest Monitoring and Green Management, College of Plant Protection, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Lice, specifically the Menopon gallinae species, are a group of parasites believed to have transitioned from birds to mammals through host-switching.
  • Their newly sequenced genome is 155 Mb long, revealing key genomic features including 11,950 protein-coding genes and a significant reduction in chemosensory and temperature-related genes in mammal lice, indicating adaptations post host-switching.
  • This research provides a foundational genome resource for studying the evolution and adaptations of parasitic lice.

Article Synopsis
  • Since 2011, Gyrovirus galga 1 (GyVg1) has been widely detected globally, but its prevalence in southern China was previously unexamined, prompting this study.
  • The study tested 2,077 samples from 113 chicken farms in six southern provinces, revealing a 15.17% positive rate for GyVg1, with varying rates by region and higher prevalence in visceral tissues.
  • Analysis of 10 GyVg1 strains showed significant genetic similarities and differences, indicating high genetic differentiation, and suggesting potential concerns for the chicken industry in China.

Electronic address:

Introduction: Fine-wool sheep are the most common breed used by the wool industry worldwide. Fine-wool sheep have over a three-fold higher follicle density and a 50% smaller fiber diameter than coarse-wool sheep.

Objectives: This study aims to clarify the underlying genetic basis for the denser and finer wool phenotype in fine-wool breeds.
