Different hypotheses stress the importance of natural or sexual selection to explain the evolution and maintenance of long outermost tail feathers in the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). Since energy costs are predicted to arise from tail length manipulation, we measured the daily energy expenditure in three experimental groups (tail-shortened, tail-elongated, and control birds) with the doubly labelled water technique. Though we did not directly measure flight cost, we assumed this to be positively related to daily energy expenditure. Mass independent daily energy expenditure (kJ/mass day) average daily metabolic rate (ml CO/g h), and water flux (ml HO/g day) did not show any significant difference among treatments in either sex. Males had higher values than females for the three parameters. Males with short original tail length experienced a higher water flux than originally long-tailed males. Females that laid more eggs during the breeding season or had heavier broods also showed higher levels of water flux which could imply a higher food intake. Our expectation of finding energetic costs of manipulated tail length in barn swallows with an integrated measure of metabolism was not fulfilled, and we did not find evidence for behavioural changes in the birds involved in the experiment.

Microtextured microneedles are tiny needle-like structures with micron-scale microtextures, and the drugs stored in the microtextures can be released after entering the skin to achieve the effect of precise drug delivery. In this study, the skin substitution model of Ogden's hyperelastic model and the microneedle array and microtexture models with different geometrical parameters were selected to simulate and analyse the flow of the microtexture microneedle arrays penetrating the skin by the finite-element method, and the length of the microneedles was determined to be 200 μm, the width 160 μm, and the value of the gaps was determined to be 420 μm. A four-pronged cone was chosen as the shape of microneedles, and a rectangle was chosen as the shape of the drug-carrying microneedle.

Objective: to investigate changes in DNA methylation in bystander and inducer cells during the manifestation ofdirect and rescue bystander effects.
Methods: Separate and co-cultivation of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of 10 conditionally healthy individuals; γ-quantum irradiation (IBL-237C emitter); modified comet electrophoresis method (Comet assay) under neutralconditions using the methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme HpaII; fluorescence microscopy with an automatedcomputer software system for analyzing the results; statistical methods.
Results: The level of DNA methylation in PBL was quantitatively assessed using DNA migration parameters inagarose gel: the length of the comet tail (in μm), the percentage of DNA in the tail part of the comet, and TailMoment (TM), which simultaneously takes into account both the amount of DNA in the tail part of the comet andthe length of the tail.

Objective: Genotoxicity assays include micronucleus test, comet assay, and malformed sperm head used to investigate the protective potential of quercetin and quercetin nanoparticles against imidacloprid-induced genotoxicity in Swiss albino mice.
Method: The ionic gelation procedure was used to synthesize the quercetin nanoparticles and characterized for their hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and encapsulation efficiency. Total 48 mice were taken in eight groups with six animals in each group.

Tail type of sheep, which may be affected by many genes with a complex mechanism, is an important economic trait concerned by both raiser and consumers. Here, we employed two sheep breeds with extreme phenotypes - Mongolian sheep (short-fat-tailed) and Bamei Mutton sheep (long-thin-tailed) to analyze the genetic differences at the genomic level and find candidate genes associated with tail phenotype. The results of population structure analysis showed that the LD decay rate of Mongolian sheep was greater than that of Bamai Mutton sheep.
