Allantoic endoderm of 3.5-day chick embryos was cultured in recombination with digestive-tract mesenchymes of 6-day chick embryos, and the differentiation of the endoderm was studied, with special attention being given to the appearance of brush-border (BB) antigens and sucrase. Irrespective of the origin of the associated digestive-tract mesenchymes, the allantoic endoderm differentiated into a columnar epithelium, expressing BB antigens and sucrase, and also into a BB antigen-negative pseudostratified or stratified epithelium of cuboidal or columnar cells with PAS or alcian blue staining in the apical portion or a BB antigen-negative stratified squamous epithelium. These results suggest that 3.5-day allantoic endoderm has the potency to differentiate into intestinal and cloacal epithelium.

The period of conceptus (embryo and extraembryonic membrane) development between fertilization and implantation in mammalian species is critical as it sets the stage for placental and fetal development. The trophectoderm and endoderm of pre-implantation ovine and porcine conceptuses undergo elongation, which requires rapid proliferation, migration, and morphological modification of the trophectoderm cells. These complex events occur in a hypoxic intrauterine environment and are supported through the transport of secretions from maternal endometrial glands to the conceptus required for the biochemical processes of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation.

Mineralization of the fetal mammalian skeleton requires a hypercalcemic gradient across the placenta from mother to fetus. However, the mechanisms responsible for maintaining the placental transport of calcium remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify calcium and vitamin D regulatory pathway components in ovine endometria and placentae across gestation.

Bacterial infections in chicken eggs often cause mortality of embryos and clinical consequences in chicks but the pathological mechanism is unclear. We investigated the pathological changes and bacterial growth kinetics in dead and live embryos following infection with 2 strains with a different clinical background and with 1 Enteritidis strain. In 2 experiments, 12-day-old embryos were infected via the allantoic sac with 100 µl of 1 to 5 × 10 CFU/ml of one of the bacteria.

In Placentalia, the fetus depends upon an organized vascular connection with its mother for survival and development. Yet, this connection was, until recently, obscure. Here, we summarize how two unrelated tissues, the primitive streak, or body axis, and extraembryonic visceral endoderm collaborate to create and organize the fetal-placental arterial connection in the mouse gastrula.

Visceral endoderm and the primitive streak interact to build the fetal-placental interface of the mouse gastrula.

Hypoblast/visceral endoderm assists in amniote nutrition, axial positioning and formation of the gut. Here, we provide evidence, currently limited to humans and non-human primates, that hypoblast is a purveyor of extraembryonic mesoderm in the mouse gastrula. Fate mapping a unique segment of axial extraembryonic visceral endoderm associated with the allantoic component of the primitive streak, and referred to as the "AX", revealed that visceral endoderm supplies the placentae with extraembryonic mesoderm.
