A new coumarin based Schiff-base chemosensor-(E)-7-(((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-yl)methylene) amino)-4-methyl-2H-chromen-2-one (H L) was synthesized and evaluated as a colorimetric sensor for Fe and fluorescence "turn on-off" response of Zn and Cu using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Upon treatment with Fe and Zn, the absorption intensity as well as the fluorescence emission intensity increases drastically compared to other common alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions, with a distinct color change which provide naked eye detection. Formation of 1:1 metal to ligand complex has been evaluated using Benesi-Hildebrand relation, Job's plot analyses, H NMR titration as well as ESI-Mass spectral analysis. The complex solution of H L with Zn ion exhibited reversibility with EDTA and regenerate free ligand for further Zn sensing. H L exhibits two INHIBIT logic gates with two different chemical inputs (i) Zn (IN1) and Cu (IN2) and (ii) Zn (IN1) and EDTA (IN2) and the emission as output. Again, an IMPLICATION logic gate is obtained with Cu and EDTA as chemical inputs and emission as output mode. Both free ligand as well as metal-complexes was optimized using density functional theory to interpret spectral properties. The corresponding energy difference between HOMO-LUMO energy gap for H L, HL-Zn and HL-Cu are 2.193, 1.834 and 0.172 eV, respectively.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory infections in babies across the world. Irrespective of progress in the development of RSV vaccines, effective small molecule drugs are still not available on the market. Based on our previous data we designed and synthesized triazole-linked coumarin-monoterpene hybrids and showed that they are indeed effective in inhibiting the RSV replication.

The complex formation of the cationic stilbene-type photoswitch CP with the anionic macrocycles carboxylato-pillar[5]arene (WP5) and carboxylato-pillar[6]arene (WP6) has been investigated in aqueous solution by optical spectroscopic, NMR and isothermal calorimetric experiments and theoretical calculations. Subsequently, the photoisomerization reactions of the supramolecular complexes formed have been studied. CP consists of a 7-diethylamino-coumarin fluorophore and an -methylpyridinium unit, which are connected via an ethene bridge.

In this work, a hydrophilic Eu-based ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor (PAAC-Eu) was developed for Cu ion detection in aqueous solutions and imaging in living cells. The sensor was prepared a simple one-step reaction at room temperature, leveraging the synergistic coordination of commercially accessible polyacrylic acid (PAA) and coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (CCAH) with Eu ions. PAAC-Eu was easy to disperse in aqueous media and exhibited two characteristic emission bands at 406 nm and 618 nm, respectively, upon excitation at 350 nm.

Amino acids play important roles in human pathology and physiology and the qualitative and quantitative determination of chiral amino acids in humans and mammals also has important impacts on the life sciences. Therefore, the introduction of artificial probes to assess the concentrations and enantiomeric compositions [ee = ([D] - [L])/([D] + [L])] of amino acids in aqueous solution is necessary in understanding certain biological processes and diagnosing and treating diseases. Herein, a bifunctional achiral coumarin probe (Br-Coumarin) is reported to determine the absolute configuration, ee value, and concentration of 16 amino acids in THF/HO = 1/4 solution at micromolar concentrations.

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary all-small-molecule organic solar cells (T-ASM-OSCs) differs significantly from that of the polymer systems (2 %), and the role of third component remains unclear. The electron donor of coumarin derivatives with simple structure and strong and broad light absorption has high PCE for T-ASM-OSCs composed of non-fullerene acceptors (Y6 and DBTBT-IC). Here, we calculated the electronic structure and interfacial properties of the binary C1-CN:Y6 and ternary C1-CN:Y6:DBTBT-IC systems using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) to explore the role of the third component (DBTBT-IC).
