Identification of the transition state is an important step in the study of reaction kinetics and mechanisms. However, for non-rigid chemical systems where multiple viable reaction pathways may exist, enumeration of all possible transition states quickly becomes computationally expensive, if at all feasible. As an alternative approach, we recently proposed a methodology where the volumetric properties of a flexible reaction system are used to locate its transition state ensemble through a comparison of its theoretically determined volume profile and experimental activation volumes derived from high pressure kinetic data. In this work, we apply this method to internal rotation of the benzene ring in 1,12-dimethoxy-[12]-paracyclophane. For this system, the transition state ensemble was found to be the state with the lowest volume, where the benzene ring and the flexible methylene tether are coplanar. This result was verified by comparison with a Gibbs free energy profile obtained via umbrella sampling.

Low temperature thermal RAFT depolymerization: the effect of Z-group substituents on molecular weight control and yield.

The labile end-groups inherent to many controlled radical polymerization methodologies, including atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization, can trigger the efficient chemical recycling of polymethacrylates yielding high percentages of pristine monomer. Yet, current thermal solution ATRP and RAFT depolymerization strategies require relatively high temperatures ( 120-170 °C) to proceed, with slower depolymerization rates, and moderate yields often reported under milder reaction conditions ( lower temperatures). In this work, we seek to promote the low temperature RAFT depolymerization of polymethacrylates regulating the Z-group substitution of dithiobenzoate.

ConspectusSkeletal editing, which involves adding, deleting, or substituting single or multiple atoms within ring systems, has emerged as a transformative approach in modern synthetic chemistry. This innovative strategy addresses the ever-present demand for developing new drugs and advanced materials by enabling precise modifications of molecular frameworks without disrupting essential functional complexities. Ideally performed at late stages of synthesis, skeletal editing minimizes the need for the cost- and labor-intensive processes often associated with synthesis, thus accelerating the discovery and optimization of complex molecular architectures.

The edge structures of carbonaceous materials exhibit temperature-dependent behavior on the atomic scale, with variations in the relative ratios of zigzag, reconstructed 5-7 zigzag (ZZ57), and armchair edges observed at different temperatures. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying the interconversion of these edge structures and the influence of the surrounding metals remain unclear. This study investigates the reconstruction and reversible transformation processes of ZZ57 edge structures in carbon materials and examines the effects of different metal atoms (Na, K, and Ca) by using density functional theory.

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are emerging as promising platform for photocatalysis, yet their highly symmetric structure leads to significant charge recombination. Herein, we employed a facile non-metallic boron (B) modification with precisely controlled doping site to introduce asymmetric local electron distribution in CTFs, achieving a 15-fold activity enhancement for CO-to-CH conversion. Calculations including frontier orbitals, dipole moments and molecular electrostatic potentials firmly demonstrated the formation of localized polarized electron regions in CTF-1 via B doping.
