We demonstrate experimentally that spurious effects caused by interference can be eliminated in passive near-field imaging by implementing a simple random illumination. We show that typical imaging artifacts are effectively eliminated when the radiation emitted by a pseudo-thermal source illuminates the sample and the scattered field is collected by an aperture probe over essentially all angles of incidence. This novel pseudo-thermal source can be easily implemented and significantly enhances the performance of passive near-field imaging.

As one of the typical applications of metamaterials, the invisibility cloak has raised vast research interests. After many years' research efforts, the invisibility cloak has extended its applicability from optics and acoustics to electrostatics and thermal diffusion. One scientific challenge that has significantly restricted the practical application of the invisibility cloak is the strong background dependence, that is, all passive cloaking devices realized thus far are unable to resist variation in the background refractive index.

This work focuses on the fabrication and evaluation of a passive wireless sensor for the monitoring of the temperature and corrosion of a metal material at high temperatures. An inductor-capacitor (LC) resonator sensor was fabricated through the screen printing of Ag-based inks on dense polycrystalline AlO substrates. The LC design was modeled using the ANSYS HFSS modeling package, with the LC passive wireless sensors operating at frequencies from 70 to 100 MHz.

With rapid development of holography, metasurface-based holographic communication scheme shows great potential in development of adaptive electromagnetic function. However, conventional passive metasurfaces are severely limited by poor reconfigurability, which makes it difficult to achieve wavefront manipulations in real time. Here, we propose a holographic communication strategy that on-demand target information is firstly acquired and encoded via a depth camera integrated with modified YOLOv5s target detection algorithm, then transmitted by software defined radio modules with long term evolution at 5 GHz, and finally reproduced in the form of holographic images by spin-decoupled programmable coding metasurfaces at 12 GHz after decoding through modified Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm.

The generation of fluid flows by autophoretic microswimmers has been proposed as a mechanism to enhance mass transport and mixing at the micro- and nanoscale. Here, we experimentally investigate the ability of model 2D active baths of photocatalytic silica-titania Janus microspheres to enhance the diffusivity of tracer particles at different microswimmer densities below the onset of collective behavior. Inspired by the similarities between our experimental findings and previous results for biological microorganisms, we then model our Janus microswimmers using a general squirmer framework, specifically treating them as neutral squirmers.
