Disrupted intermodality: Examining adaptation strategies to public transport e-scooter bans in Barcelona.

Int J Sustain Transp

December 2024

Grup d'Estudis en Mobilitat, Transport i Territori (GEMOTT), Geography Department, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Electric scooters (e-scooters) have changed urban mobility by offering a dynamic solution to the critical "first and last mile" problem, connecting individuals from their homes to public transport and their final destinations. Despite their growing popularity, e-scooters navigate through a landscape of shifting legal frameworks, highlighting the urgency for policies that not only harness their potential but also address their inherent challenges. This study aims to shed light on the intermodal practices and demographics of e-scooters users in Barcelona, explores the potential impacts of regulatory changes on established transport habits, and assesses the adaptability of users to changing transportation options.

Abortion clients who experience economic hardship face barriers paying for abortion care. Between September 2020 and June 2021, we conducted a facility-based survey with 211 abortion clients who obtained care in Mississippi, and 25 respondents completed in-depth interviews. We computed the frequency with which survey respondents used social network-based, agency-based, and individual strategies to pay for care and we employed thematic analysis to explore in-depth interviewees' decision-making and experiences with these strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • Refugee settings, like the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya, faced increased risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection and death, highlighting a gap in data on pandemic responses in these populations.
  • During the pandemic from March 2020 to December 2022, the study found that 72.6% of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases were among refugees, with significantly higher attack rates (AR) compared to the national average, leading to a concerning case fatality rate (CFR) of 7.4% for refugees.
  • Despite effective mitigation measures, including health promotion and movement restrictions, the high CFR among refugees reveals their vulnerability and the necessity for tailored interventions in future epidemic responses.

Abortion access barriers shared in "r/abortion" after : a qualitative analysis of a Reddit community post- decision leak in 2022.

December 2024

Professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Science, University of California, San Francisco, Oakland, CA, USA.

With drastic changes to abortion policy, the months following the leak and subsequent decision in 2022 were a uniquely uncertain and difficult time for abortion access in the United States. To understand experiences of challenges to abortion access during that time, we used a hybrid inductive and deductive thematic coding approach to analyse descriptions of barriers and their impacts shared in an abortion subreddit (r/abortion). A simple random sample of 10% of posts was obtained from those shared from 02 May 2022 through 23 December 2022; comments were purposively sampled during the coding process.

Objectives: To assess changes in type of abortion, gestational duration, and changes in the proportion of out-of-state residents at a university-affiliated clinic in Denver, Colorado after Texas passed Senate Bill 8 (SB 8) that banned abortion after embryonic cardiac activity can be detected.

Study Design: We reviewed records of all visits of patients obtaining an abortion ≤22 weeks and 6 days gestation between January 2019 and June 2022. We created two time periods: before SB 8 (January 2019-August 2021) and after SB 8 (September 2021-June 2022).
