Purpose: Despite efforts to minimize opioid prescribing, outpatient ventral hernia repair (VHR) with mesh remains notoriously painful, often requiring postoperative opioid analgesia. Here, we aim to characterize patterns of opioid prescribing for the heterogenous group of patients and procedures that comprise mesh-based, outpatient VHR.
Methods: The Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative registry was queried for patients undergoing VHR with mesh who were discharged the same or next day between January 2019 to October 2023.

This study presented a novel approach for the precise ablation of breast tumors using focused ultrasound (FUS), leveraging a physics-informed neural network (PINN) integrated with a realistic breast model. FUS has shown significant promise in treating breast tumors by effectively targeting and ablating cancerous tissue. This technique employs concentrated ultrasonic waves to generate intense heat, effectively destroying cancerous tissue.

Sierra Leone faces a substantial backlog of patients with inguinal hernia in need of repair due to a shortage of surgical providers. The current mitigation strategy includes task-sharing with associate clinicians and non-specialist medical doctors, and the economic impact of this approach needs assessment for potential scale-up. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of open mesh repair of inguinal hernias by associate clinicians and non-specialist medical doctors in adult males (>18 years) compared to no treatment, as well as between the two provider types and to estimate the budget impact of clearing the backlog in Sierra Leone.
