AI Article Synopsis

  • - The study focuses on creating polyion complex (PIC) particles for delivering Polymyxin B (Pol-B), an antibiotic used against hard-to-treat gram-negative bacteria.
  • - Researchers identified various conditions to efficiently combine Pol-B with poly(styrene sulphonate) (PSS) to produce stable colloidal PIC particles with different ratios of Pol-B to PSS.
  • - The stability of these PIC particles was tested in conditions similar to those found in the human body, and their antimicrobial effects against a specific gram-negative bacterium were preliminarily evaluated.

Article Abstract

Here, we describe novel polyion complex (PIC) particles for the delivery of Polymyxin B (Pol-B), an antimicrobial peptide currently used in the clinic as a last resort antibiotic against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. A range of conditions for the controlled assembly of Pol-B with poly(styrene sulphonate) (PSS) has been identified which let us prepare stable colloidal PIC particles. This way, PIC particles containing different Pol-B:PSS ratios have been prepared and their stability under simulated physiological conditions (. pH, osmotic pressure and temperature) characterised. Furthermore, preliminary evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of these Pol-B containing PIC particles has been performed, by monitoring their effect on the growth of , an opportunistic gram-negative bacterium.

Double hydrophilic diblock copolymers (GA and GA), composed of non-charged poly(glycosyloxyethyl methacrylate) (PGEMA, G) and cationic poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride), were synthesized via reversible addition-fragementation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization. Likewise, diblock copolymers (GS and GS), composed of PGEMA and anionic poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate) were synthesized via RAFT. The subscripts in these abbreviations indicate the degree of polymerization (DP) of each block.

We introduce Astrophysical Hybrid-Kinetic simulations with the flash code ([Formula: see text]) - a new Hybrid particle-in-cell (PIC) code developed within the framework of the multiphysics code flash. The new code uses a second-order accurate Boris integrator and a predictor-predictor-corrector algorithm for advancing the Hybrid-kinetic equations, using the constraint transport method to ensure that magnetic fields are divergence-free. The code supports various interpolation schemes between the particles and grid cells, with post-interpolation smoothing to reduce finite particle noise.

Phase-Specific Immobilization of Phospholipase D as an Efficient Pickering Emulsion Interfacial Catalyst for Converting Oil Phospholipid.

Phosphatidylserine (PS), a rare phospholipid in oil (AKO) critical for brain development, can be produced from the abundant phosphatidylcholine (PC) using phospholipase D (PLD) in Pickering emulsion interfacial catalysis (PIC) systems. However, the exposure of PLD to organic solvent around the emulsion interface diminished PLD activity, limiting the conversion efficiency of PS. In this study, we proposed a strategy to fabricate a PIC system with high efficiency and stability by immobilizing PLD in a specific phase on the emulsion interface, based on investigating the effect of the interfacial microenvironment on PLD activity.

Growing polyion complex micelles: kinetics and mechanism of electrostatic template polymerization and assembly.

Hypothesis: Electrostatic-templated polymerization (ETP) is a recently developed strategy for robust fabrication of stable polyion complex (PIC) micelles with regulated size and morphology, yet the kinetics and mechanism about this one pot process remain elusive.

Experiments: In ETP method, ionic monomers are polymerized in the presence of an oppositely charged ionic-neutral diblock copolymer as template. We investigate the monomer conversion and electrostatic assembly as a function of time, under different polymerization conditions of ionic strength, pH, template/monomer molar ratio and the presence of a cross-linker.

This paper presents a method to enhance extended interaction oscillator (EIO) output power based on a dual-cavity parallel structure (DCPS). This stucture consists of two conventional ladder-line structures in parallel through a connecting structure, which improves the coupling efficiency between the cavities. The dual output power fusion structure employs an H-T type combiner as the output coupler, which can effectively combine the two input waves in phase to further increase the output power.
