Here, we present the first approach to human lenses investigations with and without cataract development changes in nanoscale resolution using AFM - IR spectroscopy. We proved that the application of this technique allowed us to better understand of structural changes connected with advancing disease process in studied lenses. The obtained results show the impact of the disease development on the secondary structure of proteins in these human tissues. The domination of the β-turn protein secondary structure is observed in the clear (non-affected by cataract) lens. While, in the case of the opaque (cataractous) samples the different degree of the degradation due to development of cataract, was recognized. Briefly, this process is associated with the protein secondary changes from β-turn/β-sheet parallel for less altered part of the lens to stable anti-parallel β-sheet for the more degraded part. Interestingly, the AFM - IR technique provided estimation of the protein secondary structure without the need for using deconvolution procedure.

Background: Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) play critical roles in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the locations of PTM-modified sites across protein secondary structures and regulatory patterns in HCC remain largely uncharacterized.
Methods: Total proteome and nine PTMs (phosphorylation, acetylation, crotonylation, ubiquitination, lactylation, N-glycosylation, succinylation, malonylation, and β-hydroxybutyrylation) in tumor sections and paired normal adjacent tissues derived from 18 HCC patients were systematically profiled by 4D-Label free proteomics analysis combined with PTM-based peptide enrichment.

Background: Plant-based foods have reduced protein digestibility and frequently display unbalanced amino acid profiles. Plant-based foods are therefore considered inferior to animal-based foods in their anabolic potential. No study has assessed the anabolic potential of a vegan diet that provides a large variety of plant-based protein sources in older adults.

Background: Muscle atrophy after the rupture of a rotator cuff (RC) tendon is a major factor that increases the risk of secondary complications and re-rupture. Metformin, a type 2 diabetes treatment, can be used to modulate intracellular signaling pathways that promote muscle growth. This study aimed to verify whether systemic metformin administration could prevent supraspinatus (SS) atrophy after RC rupture in a rat model.

The application of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as cryoprotectants in frozen foods has rarely been explored. In this study, the cryoprotective effect of CNF (2, 4 and 6 % w/w) on mechanically separated chicken meat (MSCM) surimi-like material was investigated, during frozen storage (5 and 60 days) under temperature fluctuation. Surimi-like without cryopreservation agents was more susceptible to protein oxidation due to ice recrystallization.

BACKGROUND Toluene poisoning can occur as a result of occupational exposure in industries such as painting, as well as through misuse, leading to complications such as neurological symptoms due to the accumulation of the metabolic byproduct of hippuric acid and metabolic acidosis. However, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Hippuric acid is not removed by dialysis, so urinary excretion plays a central role.
