Two new metabolites, diorcinolic acid (1) and β-d-glucopyranosyl aspergillusene A (8), together with six diphenylethers (2-7), a diketopiperazine (9), a chromone (10) and a xanthone (11) were isolated from the fungus Aspergillus sydowii derived from the marine sponge Stelletta sp. The planar structures and their relative configurations were elucidated by analysing 1D, 2D NMR and HRESIMS data. Compound 8 is the first glycoside of phenolic bisabolane sesquiterpenes. Compounds 1 and 8 exhibited mild cytotoxicity against KB (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells), HepG2 (human liver cancer cells) and HCT 116 (human colon cancer cells). All compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity and their abilities to suppress LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production. Compounds 2 and 4-7 showed mild antibacterial activity against human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and fish pathogens Streptococcus iniae and Vibrio ichthyoenteri, and compounds 4 and 7 weakly suppressed NO production.

The immobilization of microorganisms in polymeric hydrogel has gained attention as a potential method for applications in various fields, offering several advantages over traditional cell free-living technologies. The present study aims to compare the efficiency of selenium (Se) bioremediation and biorecovery by two different fungal types, both in their free and immobilized forms using alginate hydrogels. Our results demonstrated an improvement in the amount of Se(IV) removed from the hydrogels of Aspergillus ochraceus (∼97%) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (∼43%) compared to that of the planktonic cultures (∼57% and ∼9-17%).

Purpose: The primary objective was to evaluate the clinical response of refractory cases of fungal keratitis to topical 1% posaconazole therapy.
Methods: Prospective longitudinal non-randomized open label dual-cohort study of 70 eyes of refractory fungal keratitis, 35 were recruited as posaconazole treatment (PCZ) group for topical 1% posaconazole therapy and compared to 35 eyes on conventional antifungal therapy. Study parameters included demographic and treatment details, visual acuity, comprehensive slit-lamp biomicroscopy, clinical photography, ASOCT at recruitment and weekly (week 1, 2, 3 and 4 after treatment initiation).

This work aims to establish a strategy to comprehensively assess the indoor air quality in schools including the analysis of chemical pollutants, bio-aerosols like fungi, bacteria and respiratory viruses and the identification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds applying non-targeted approaches. For this, a pilot study was performed in four primary schools from Spain, located in different urban and rural areas during different seasons. Common indoor pollutants, like CO NO, O, CO, particulate matter (PM, PM), ultrafine particles (UFP), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and formaldehyde (HCHO), were assessed in terms of maximum recommended levels, daily variations, seasonality, and school location.
