A novel kind of optrode fabricated on a sapphire substrate is proposed for optogenetic applications in neuroscience. Eight thin-film neural electrodes and a GaN-LED are monolithically integrated on the surface of a sapphire shank. The LED is used for optogenetic stimulation and the multiple electrodes are used for simultaneous recording of neural activities. The output power density of the LED is 1-19 mW/mm2 at 468 nm, driving with a current from 0.7-10 mA. The mean electrochemical impedance of the eight recoding sites on the optrode at 1 kHz is 385 kΩ. The highest temperature-raise at tissue around the LED is almost 1 °C when the output power density is 3 mw/mm2. The monolithic integrated structure will make it a powerful tool for optogenetics.

The integration of flexible electronics and photonics has the potential to create revolutionary technologies, yet it has been challenging to marry electronic and photonic components on a single polymer device, especially through high-volume manufacturing. Here, we present a robust, chiplet-level heterogeneous integration of polymer-based circuits (CHIP), where several post-fabricated, ultrathin, polymer electronic, and optoelectronic chiplets are vertically bonded into one single chip at room temperature and then shaped into application-specific form factors with monolithic Input/Output (I/O). As a demonstration, we applied this process and developed a flexible 3D-integrated optrode with high-density arrays of microelectrodes for electrical recording and micro light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) for optogenetic stimulation while with unprecedented integration of additional temperature sensors for bio-safe operations and shielding designs for optoelectronic artifact prevention.

This innovative method enables precise focus control within a monolithic metafiber device by allowing light coupled into any of the 37 cores to be precisely focused at predefined locations. Our approach demonstrates significant advances over conventional lenses and offers unique functionalities through computationally designed holograms.

The global challenge of wastewater contamination, especially from persistent pollutants like radioactive isotopes and heavy metals, demands innovative purification solutions. Radioactive iodine isotopes (I and I), stemming from nuclear activities, pose serious health risks due to their mobility, bioaccumulation, and ionizing radiation, particularly impacting thyroid health. Similarly, hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is highly toxic and persistent in water, linked to cancer and other severe health issues.

We observed tunable characteristics of optical frequency combs (OFCs) generated from InGaAs/GaAs double quantum wells (DQWs) asymmetric waveguide two-section mode-locked lasers (TS-MLLs). This involves an asymmetric waveguide mode-locked semiconductor laser (AWML-SL) operating at a center wavelength of net modal gain of approximately 1.06 µm, which indicates a stable pulse shape, with the power-current(P-I) characteristic curve revealing a small difference between forward and reverse drive currents in the gain region.

Optical computing offers advantages such as high bandwidth and low loss, playing a crucial role in signal processing, communication, and sensing applications. Traditional optical logic gates, based on nonlinear fibers and optical amplifiers, suffer from poor robustness and large footprints, hindering their on-chip integration. All-optical logic gates based on topological photonic crystals have emerged as a promising approach for developing robust and monolithic optical computing systems.
