We present a case of a Caucasian woman aged 67 years referred with a 4-day history of sore throat, dysphagia, fever and nasal blockage. Examination revealed a swollen neck and pharyngeal pseudomembrane. A throat swab was positive on culture for , with toxin expression confirmed on PCR and Elek testing. A diagnosis of classical respiratory diphtheria was made, with subsequent confirmation of the patient's domesticated dog as the source of infection. The dog had recently been attacked by a wild badger and was being treated for an ear infection. The patient made a good recovery with intravenous antimicrobial and supportive therapy; however, she subsequently developed a diphtheritic polyneuropathy in the form of a severe bulbar palsy with frank aspiration necessitating percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding. A mild sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy was also diagnosed. The patient eventually made an almost complete recovery.

Introduction: Breathing-synchronized hypoglossal-nerve stimulation is a treatment option for suitable patients with severe obstructive-sleep-apnoea. The classical implantation technique requires three incisions: submental to place the stimulating-electrode on terminal branches of the hypoglossal-nerve, sub-clavicular to place the impulse generator, and on the lateral chest-wall to place a breathing-sensor lead. A two-incision-technique has been propagated and widely adopted whereby the respiratory-sensing-lead is placed deeper to the IPG-pocket.

Clinical case of co-infection: Dengue fever and respiratory mycoplasmosis in a child.

Respir Med Case Rep

Central RI [Research Institute] of Epidemiology, Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor), Moscow, Russia.

According to WHO, dengue fever (DF) is currently endemic to more than 100 countries in various regions of Africa, America, and Asia; outbreaks have been reported in Europe. In the Russian Federation, there is a much smaller proportion of children among those infected due to the imported nature of the infection. We described a clinical case of imported dengue fever in an adolescent girl in Moscow after a 5-day vacation.

The application of biological therapy and glucocorticoids in Auto-immune diseases (AID) patients will cause immunocompromised host (ICH) prone to infection. And monocytes play a key role in both innate and adaptive immune responses. We aimed to investigate the changes of circulating monocyte subsets in AID or AID-ICH patients with pulmonary infection.

Background: The clinical outcomes and microbiological features of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) caused by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) and classical Klebsiella pneumoniae (cKp) have not been well understood.

Methods: This study collected 287 non-repetitive Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from 287 LRTI patients. All these strains underwent annotation for resistance and virulence factors, with 141 strains undergoing mouse infection experiments to assess their virulence.
