Background: One of the significant challenges that can arise during cataract surgery is the occurrence of posterior capsule rupture (PCR) and vitreous loss. It may result in different complications including cystoid macular edema, endophthalmitis, glaucoma, and considerably retinal detachment which consequently contributes to poor functional outcomes.

Methods: This study was a prospective double blinded randomized clinical trial including 42 patients with previous complicated cataract surgery including posterior capsular rupture and consequently vitreous loss that anterior vitrectomy was done for them.

The Orbitomalar Ligament: A Cleavage Plane in Oculofacial Trauma.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

December 2024

Section of Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery.

We describe an oculofacial injury phenotype manifesting as a cleavage plane following the orbitomalar ligament in 5 cases. Across these cases, curvilinear wounds followed the course of the orbitomalar ligament, running clean planes through orbicularis oculi down to the infraorbital rim and arcus marginalis. One case involved bilateral orbitomalar ligaments, and 1 case involved the inferior canaliculus.

Subconjunctival trypsin injection for anterior chamber fibrin exudates in eyes with globe rupture following vitrectomy.

Int J Ophthalmol

November 2024

Department of Retina and Vitreous, Jingliang Eye Hospital, Guangxi Medical University, Nanning 530021, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the safety and effectiveness of subconjunctival injections of trypsin versus dexamethasone (DEX) for treating fibrin exudates in patients after globe rupture repair.
  • A total of 52 patients were treated with either trypsin or DEX, with results indicating that both treatments led to similar levels of exudate absorption, but trypsin had a quicker absorption time and was less irritating for patients.
  • Overall, trypsin was found to be a more comfortable treatment option than DEX, with no adverse effects reported and stable intraocular pressure.

Atorvastatin Alleviates Age-Related Macular Degeneration via AIM2-Regulated Pyroptosis.

Inflammation

October 2024

Chongqing Key Laboratory for the Prevention and Treatment of Major Blinding Eye Diseases, Chongqing Eye Institute, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, Chongqing, 400016, China.

The underlying causes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remain elusive and treatment options of it are limited, while atorvastatin (AT) is expected to improve AMD. Our study sought to uncover the specific mechanisms that initiate pyroptosis in AMD and elucidate whether AT ameliorates Aβ1-40-induced retinal damage by inhibiting pyroptosis. An animal model of AMD was triggered by Aβ1-40, and the therapeutic efficacy of AT was evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Electroretinogram (ERG) and other methods.
