To develop pH responsive hydrogels, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) has been grafted on to chitosan by free radical initiation method using azoisobutrylnitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The optimum grafting conditions were worked out for grafting of NIPAM onto 1g of chitosan by varying one reaction parameter at a time and keeping all other parameters constant. Binary monomers were grafted for five different concentrations of comonomers acrylic acid (AAc), acrylamide (AAm) and acrylonitrile (AN) at optimum grafting conditions evaluated for GMA alone onto chitosan. The grafted copolymers were analyzed by FTIR, TGA/DTA, XRD and SEM. The swelling studies for the grafted samples were performed at various pH in order to explore their end use in sorption of Cr(VI), Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions from water system. Metal ion sorption behaviour of polymeric samples was studied as function of time, temperature and pH. Various metal ion sorption parameters such as percent uptake (P), partition coefficient (K) and retention capacity (Q) were discussed. Chitosan grafted with binary monomers NIPAM-co-AAc and NIPAM-co-AAm showed best results for sorption of all three metal ions.

The development of materials from renewable resources has been increasing, intending to reduce the consumption of fossil sources, with terpenes being one of the main families that reduce the consumption of isoprene. The study of the binary catalytic system neodymium versatate/dibutyl magnesium (NdV/Mg(-Bu)), for the coordination homopolymerization of β-myrcene and β-farnesene, was carried out analysing different [Nd] : [Mg] ratios (between 4 and 10). Reporting conversions of 92% and 83% at an [Nd] : [Mg] ratio of 8 for polymyrcene (PMy) and polyfarnesene (PFa), respectively, and microstructures comprising 1,4 content above 80% for both polymers (PMy, -59% and PFa, -83%).

A computational study of X-H···Y binary hydrogen-bonded complexes was undertaken to examine the red- and blue-shifting behavior of three model X-H proton donors interacting with a series of Lewis bases: Y = NH, NCLi, NCH, NCF, CH, BF, CO, N and Ne. Two of these proton donors, FArH and FCH, have blue-shifting tendencies, while the third, FH, has red-shifting tendencies. A perturbation theory model for frequency shifts that was derived many years ago was employed to partition the predicted frequency shift into the sum of two components, one dependent on the second derivative of the interaction energy with respect to X-H displacement and the other dependent on the X-H bond length change in the binary complex.

Sequence-defined polymers composed of a large pool of chemically distinct monomers (SDPs) have been pursued to achieve the structural and functional precisions exhibited by biopolymers in nonbiological environments. In contrast to the incremental growth of SDPs by sequential addition of individual monomers, the iterative exponential growth (IEG) method allows the synthesis of high molecular-weight SDPs, but their sequences have been composed mostly of binary monomers. Consequently, achieving high molecular-weight SDPs built with a large pool of monomers remains a challenge.

In this paper, we proposed a thermodynamic procedure to evaluate binary surfactant mixed adsorbed film and mixed micelle compositions above critical micelle concentrations. This theory first calculates the change in the molar ratio of two surfactants in monomer and micelle states based on the phase-separation model and then imposes the chemical equilibrium between the mixed adsorbed film and mixed micelle of known composition and concentration. We applied this theory to a cationic-nonionic surfactant mixed system, and the relationship between the calculated mixed adsorbed film composition and foam film stability was discussed using the DLVO theory.

Motivation: Tandem monomeric units, integral components of eukaryotic genomes, form higher-order repeat (HOR) structures that play crucial roles in maintaining chromosome integrity and regulating gene expression and protein abundance. Given their significant influence on processes such as evolution, chromosome segregation, and disease, developing a sensitive and automated tool for identifying HORs across diverse genomic sequences is essential.
Results: In this study, we applied the GRMhor (Global Repeat Map hor) algorithm to analyse the centromeric region of chromosome 20 in three individual human genomes, as well as in the centromeric regions of three higher primates.
