Defining the optimal radiation-induced lymphopenia metric to discern its survival impact in esophageal cancer.

Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys

January 2025

Department of Radiation Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston TX, United States of America; Department of Radiation Oncology, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: A detrimental association between radiation-induced lymphopenia (RIL) and oncologic outcomes in esophageal cancer patients has been established. However, an optimal metric for RIL remains undefined, but is important for application of this knowledge in clinical decision-making and trial designs. The aim of this study was to find the optimal RIL metric discerning survival.

December 2024

Waite Research Institute, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, The University of Adelaide, Waite Campus, Urrbrae, SA 5064, Australia; Joint International Research Laboratory of Metabolic & Developmental Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University-University of Adelaide Joint Centre for Agriculture and Health, State Key Laboratory of Hybrid Rice, School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Plant inflorescences are complex, highly diverse structures whose morphology is determined in meristems that form during reproductive development. Inflorescence structure influences flower formation, and consequently grain number, and yield in crops. Correct inflorescence and flower development require tight control of gene expression via complex interplay between regulatory networks.

The link between eye movements and cognitive function in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

Exp Brain Res

January 2025

Department of Neurology and Suzhou Clinical Research Center of Neurological Disease, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, No. 1055, Sanxiang Road, Suzhou, 215004, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China.

This study investigated the relationship between eye movement parameters and cognitive function in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD). A total of 80 patients with AD (mild and moderate) and 34 normal controls (NC) participated. Neuropsychological assessments were conducted using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), while eye movements were recorded using eye-tracking technology.

Aqueous Solubility of Sodium and Chloride Salts of Glycine─"Uncommon" Common-Ion Effects of Self-Titrating Solids.

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John's University, 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, New York 11439, United States.

Although glycine is the simplest of the amino acids, its solution and solid-state properties are far from straightforward. The aqueous solubility of glycine plays an important role in various applications, including nutrition, food products, biodegradable plastics, and drug development. There is evidence that glycine in subsaturated pH 3-8 solutions forms a dimer, as suggested by several techniques.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide necessitates that medical undergraduates acquire a deep understanding of the disease to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective management. Traditional teaching methods, while foundational, often lack the interactive elements that enhance student engagement and knowledge retention. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel educational board game, "Diabe-teach," in enhancing knowledge retention among medical students compared with conventional self-study methods.
