Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide evidence that free radical damage is a component of retinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, and to determine whether melatonin, vitamin E and octreotide can protect the retina from this injury.
Methods: The right eyes of 50 male guinea pigs weighing 500-600 g were used. The animals were randomly assigned to group 1 (control), group 2 (I/R), group 3 (melatonin + I/R), group 4 (vitamin E + I/R) and group 5 (octreotide + I/R). Groups 3, 4 and 5 received four subcutaneous injections with a 6-h interval for a total daily dose of 10 mg/kg melatonin, 150 mg/kg vitamin E and 22 g/kg octreotide. The first dose of each substance was administered 5 minutes before retinal ischemia, which was induced for 1.5 hours, followed by reperfusion for 24 hours. All three substances were repeated for 6, 12 and 18 hours during reperfusion. The animals were killed at 24 hours of reperfusion. Retinas were isolated and processed for the quantification of malondialdehyde (MDA).
Results: The compounds had the following relationships: melatonin more than vitamin E more than octreotide in preventing retinal damage by ischemia-reperfusion. All three gave significant protection against the formation of MDA (10.42.3, 12.42.4, 13.91.5 nmol/100 mg tissue wet weight, respectively) compared to the control (3.71.3 nmol/100 mg tissue wet weight) and I/R groups (22.76.2 nmol/100 mg tissue wet weight).
Conclusions: This study demonstrates the inhibitory effect of melatonin, vitamin E and octreotide on MDA levels during retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury. (Eur J Ophthalmol 2002; 12: 77-83).

Despite extensive research, determining the optimal level of sunlight exposure for human health remains a challenge, emphasizing the need for ongoing scientific inquiry into this critical aspect of human well-being. This review aims to elucidate how different components of the solar spectrum, particularly near-infrared (NIR) radiation and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) affect human health in diverse ways depending on factors such as time of day and duration of exposure. Sunlight has beneficial effects from the production of melatonin by NIR and vitamin D by UVB.

Objectives: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a distinct subtype of breast cancer that has a poor prognosis due to the lack of effective therapeutic agents. Since a significant proportion of human surgical samples of TNBC expressed mRNA for the growth hormone (GH), growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors, and the mitogenic proliferative activity of GH, GHRH, and GnRH, have been identified as effective therapeutic targets for somatostatin and its analogs and GnRH analogs, Di Bella Method (DBM), a combination of hormonal analogs and vitamins, was introduced to target and inhibit solid tumors. The present study aimed to improve the prognosis of TNBC using DBM in women with TNBC.

Obesity causes fat accumulation, and sarcopenia causes loss of muscle mass and strength; together, they worsen insulin resistance and accelerate muscle decline, creating a harmful cycle. Some supplements, along with physical exercise, could be remedies for sarcopenic obesity (SO). In this review, we aim to draw a comparison between supplements studied in experimental research and those evaluated in clinical studies for SO.

The Pichia pastoris expression system is a favorable platform for production of pharmaceutical proteins. Treatment of strains with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) has been shown to enhance the yield of recombinant proteins, thereby contributing to a reduction in production costs. However, the specific mechanism of action of NAC remains unclear.

Melatonin (MT) can improve plant resistance and fruit quality. The mechanism by which MT affects soluble sugar and organic acids accumulation in drupe fruits is not clear. In this study, 100 µmol/L MT was sprayed on the leaves of plum trees at the second stage of rapid fruit expansion (90 and 97 d after flowering), and the effects of MT on plum fruit quality and its effects on the soluble sugar-organic acid metabolism were investigated.
