Aim: The aim of this study was to use statistical parametric mapping (SPM) to investigate differences in the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of decompression illness (DCI) and non-diving control subjects.

Methods: Twenty DCI subjects were imaged using 99Tcm hexamethylproplylene amine oxime (HMPAO) single photon emission tomography (SPET) within days of their incident of DCI, and on a second occasion between 2 and 27 months after their DCI event. SPM was used to make a comparison between decompression illness studies and a second group of non-diving control studies for both early and late imaging of DCI.

Early diagnosis in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important for the administration of new treatments. The purpose of this study was to differentiate mildly/moderately demented AD patients from normal controls by means of activational brain SPECT, and to investigate the correlation between regional cerebral blood flow and dementia severity. Activational brain SPECT was performed 1 week after basal brain SPECT in 12 mild/moderate AD patients according to NINCDS-ADRDA criteria (mean age 69+/-7 years) and in seven healthy, age-matched, volunteer controls (mean age 65+/-9 years).

The size and severity of perfusion defects in acute cerebral ischaemia on single photon emission tomographic (SPET) images may provide useful information regarding long-term (> 3 month) stroke outcome. A decreased predictive value has been reported with delayed SPET more than 24 h after stroke onset. We examined 20 patients with acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarctions using serial 99Tcm-ECD or 99Tcm-HMPAO SPET (SPET 1 one day and SPET 2 three days after stroke onset).

Alzheimer's disease is associated with a loss in presynaptic cholinergic function. It has been suggested that cholinergic inhibitors such as donepezil hydrochloride (Donepezil) could restore this function and improve some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Previous work has shown that Donepezil improves cognitive and global function in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
