Idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia (IIH) is characterized by hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, vomiting, dehydration, and failure to thrive. It is caused by the presence of biallelic loss-of-function variants in the locus. Although hypercalcemia has been linked to the consumption of vitamin D-fortified milk, no reports have documented its role in triggering IIH in patients with variants.

Primum Non Nocere: The Onus to Characterize the Potential Harms of Psychedelic Treatment.

Am J Psychiatry

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (Ghaznavi, King, Rosenbaum); Department of Cardiology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (Ruskin); Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, Chemical Neurobiology Laboratory, Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (Haggerty); Havard Medical School, Boston (Ghaznavi, Ruskin, Haggerty, King, Rosenbaum).

The last few years have seen exponential growth in interest, investment, advocacy, and research into psychedelics as therapeutics. This reflects an optimism about the potential promise of psychedelics as therapeutics. As with all therapeutic interventions, research is needed not only into their benefits but also potential risks.

Saturated lysing efficiency of CD8 cells induced monostable, bistable and oscillatory HIV kinetics.

October 2024

Department of Environment and Genetics, School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University, Bundoora, VIC 3086, Australia.

Effector CD8 cells lyse human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV)-infected CD4 cells by recognizing a viral peptide presented by human leukocyte antigens (HLA) on the CD4 cell surface, which plays an irreplaceable role in within-host HIV clearance. Using a semi-saturated lysing efficiency of a CD8 cell, we discuss a model that captures HIV dynamics with different magnitudes of lysing rate induced by different HLA alleles. With the aid of local stability analysis and bifurcation plots, exponential interactions among CD4 cells, HIV, and CD8 cells were investigated.

In hemodialysis (HD), complement activation, bioincompatibility, and inflammation are intricately intertwined. In the 1970s, as HD became a routine therapy, the observation of complement pathway activation and transient leukopenia by cellulosic dialysis membranes triggered the bioincompatibility debate and its clinical relevance. Extensive deliberations have covered definitions, assessment markers, scope, and long-term clinical consequences of membrane-dependent bioincompatibility reactions.

1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester (DINCH) is a non-phthalate plasticizer used as a replacement of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in daily usage items. It is not known whether continuous exposure to low doses of DINCH can lead to hepatic alterations, the liver being the organ responsible for its metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activation of inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in the liver of lactating dams after DINCH exposure, and whether these effects may be observed on postnatal day 6 (PND6) offspring.
