Description of implementing a mail-based overdose education and naloxone distribution program in community supervision settings during COVID-19.

J Subst Use Addict Treat

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy Practice & Science, Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Practice, University of Kentucky, 789 S. Limestone, Lexington, KY 40508, USA. Electronic address:

Introduction: This study uses the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) model to retrospectively describe the mail-based overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) program developed in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC) for use in the HEALing Communities Study in Kentucky (HCS-KY) and details the reach of this innovative delivery model.

Methods: HCS-KY is a community-engaged cluster-randomized trial assessing the effects of implementing evidence-based practices, including OEND, on overdose death reduction across 16 communities highly impacted by the opioid epidemic in Kentucky. The study launch coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • In-hospital case-fatality rates for acute pulmonary embolism (PE) have been decreasing, but the annual incidence is rising, leading to more survivors requiring long-term care and treatment.
  • Hospital costs for acute PE are generally lower in Europe than in the US, but they can significantly increase for patients with additional health issues and need for urgent treatments.
  • The use of catheter-directed treatment (CDT) for PE is growing rapidly, with ongoing trials assessing their effectiveness and cost benefits, while structured outpatient programs could help alleviate the long-term socio-economic impact of PE on patients.

Immune cell effector therapies, including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells, T-cell receptor (TCR) T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophage-based therapies, represent a transformative approach to cancer treatment, harnessing the immune system to target and eradicate malignant cells. CAR-T cell therapy, the most established among these, involves engineering T cells to express CARs specific to cancer cell antigens, showing remarkable efficacy in hematologic malignancies like leukemias, B-cell lymphomas, and multiple myeloma. Similarly, TCR-modified therapies, which reprogram T cells to recognize intracellular tumor antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, offer promise for a range of solid tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • There is no agreed-upon standard for measuring how well triage systems work, and this study aimed to compare different outcomes used in triage assessments.
  • Conducted in the Emergency Department of Merano Hospital, researchers evaluated the Manchester Triage System (MTS) using various outcomes, focusing on predictive capabilities measured by the AUROC statistics.
  • Results showed that MTS performed well in terms of objective measures like mortality and ICU admissions, but no single outcome was clearly the best, suggesting a need for expert consensus on evaluating triage system effectiveness.

Are virtual harm reduction interventions right for everyone?: A qualitative study of the appropriateness of overdose response hotlines and applications for different subgroups of people who use substances.

J Subst Use Addict Treat

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, 2J2.00 Walter C Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, 8440 112 St. NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2R7, Canada; Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, 2J2.00 Walter C Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, 8440 112 St. NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2R7, Canada. Electronic address:

Introduction: Overdose response hotlines and apps are novel virtual harm reduction technologies that allow remote monitoring of individuals while they use substances (especially if they use alone) through electronic means. The authors explored partner perspectives to determine which groups of people who use substances (PWUS) these services would be most appropriate for, with the aim of better informing service providers on how to target their use to maximize benefit for clients.

Methods: The study conducted 64 semi-structured interviews with participants from a variety of backgrounds (individuals with lived or living experience of substance use, lay persons, health care providers, harm reduction workers, and operational experts).
