The interaction of clinically relevant microorganisms is the focus of various studies, e.g. the interaction between the pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans, and the bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. During infection both release arachidonic acid, which they can transform into eicosanoids. This study evaluated the production of prostaglandin E, prostaglandin F and 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid by biofilms of P. aeruginosa and C. albicans. The influence of co-incubation, acetylsalicylic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid on biofilm formation and eicosanoid production was evaluated. Acetylsalicylic acid decreased colony forming units of P. aeruginosa, but increased metabolic activity and eicosanoid production of the cells. In contrast to prostaglandin E, prostaglandin F production by C. albicans was insensitive to acetylsalicylic acid, indicating that different enzymes are responsible for their production in this yeast. Nordihydroguaiaretic acid inhibited biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa, however co-incubation provided protection against this inhibitor. Production of these eicosanoids could affect pathogen-clearance and infection dynamics and this previously uncharacterized facet of interaction could facilitate novel therapeutic intervention against polymicrobial infection.

Background: Myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA), and ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA), are female-predominant conditions; clinical trials are lacking to guide medical management for the common underlying vasomotor etiologies. Data on long-term outcomes of (M)INOCA patients following attendance at a women's heart centre (WHC) are lacking.
Methods: Women diagnosed with MINOCA (n = 51) or INOCA (n = 112) were prospectively followed for 3 years at the Leslie Diamond WHC (LDWHC) in Vancouver.
Background: Antiplatelet drugs, such as clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, and acetylsalicylic acid, may be associated with a risk of adverse events (AEs). Vanessa's Law was enacted to strengthen regulations to protect Canadians from drug-related side effects (with mandatory reporting of serious adverse events [SAEs]).
Objective: To determine whether Vanessa's Law has led to an increase in SAE reporting among antiplatelet users.

Certain medications have shown significant effectiveness in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events and mortality, leading them to be among those that are prescribed most commonly for Canadian seniors. However, polypharmacy, which disproportionately affects older adults, is particularly concerning for frail individuals who are at higher risk for adverse medication-related events. The deprescribing process is the discontinuation, either immediate or gradual, of inappropriate medications, to address polypharmacy and improve outcomes.

CD73, an important metabolic and immune escape-promoting gene, catalyzes the hydrolysis of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) to adenosine (ADO). AMP has anti-inflammatory and vascular relaxant properties, while ADO has a strong immunosuppressive effect, suggesting that CD73 has pro-inflammatory and immune escape effects. However, CD73 also decreased proinflammatory reaction, suggesting that CD73 has a positive side to the body.
