Background: Major histocompatibility complex class-1-related protein (MR1), unlike human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class-1, was until recently considered to be monomorphic. MR1 presents metabolites in the context of host responses to bacterial infection. MR1-restricted TCRs specific to tumor cells have been described, raising interest in their potential therapeutic application for cancer treatment.

Exercise to combat cancer: focusing on the ends.

Physiol Genomics

December 2024

School of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide and although prognosis and survivorship after therapy have improved significantly, current cancer treatments have long-term health consequences. For decades telomerase-mediated telomere maintenance has been an attractive anti-cancer therapeutic target due to its abundance and role in telomere maintenance, pathogenesis, and growth in neoplasms. Telomere maintenance-specific cancer therapies, however, are marred by off-target side effects that must be addressed before they reach clinical practice.

A novel deep learning-based method for automatic stereology of microglia cells from low magnification images.

Neurotoxicol Teratol

Microglial cells mediate diverse homeostatic, inflammatory, and immune processes during normal development and in response to cytotoxic challenges. During these functional activities, microglial cells undergo distinct numerical and morphological changes in different tissue volumes in both rodent and human brains. However, it remains unclear how these cytostructural changes in microglia correlate with region-specific neurochemical functions.
