Because acute kidney injuries (AKI) are one of the critical health problems worldwide, studies on the risk factors, mechanisms, and treatment strategies seem necessary. Glycerol (GLY), known to induce cell necrosis via myoglobin accumulation in renal tubules, is widely used as an AKI model. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of gallic acid (GA) against GLY-induced AKI.

SARS-CoV-2 infection and the resultant COVID-19 pneumonia cause significant damage to the airway and lung epithelium. This damage manifests as mucus hypersecretion, pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis, which often lead to long-term complications collectively referred to as long COVID or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). The airway epithelium, as the first line of defence against respiratory pathogens, depends on airway basal stem cells (BSCs) for regeneration.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) represents a novel form of angiogenesis discovered in numerous malignant tumours in recent years. Unlike traditional angiogenesis, VM facilitates tumour blood supply independently of endothelial cells by enabling tumour cells to form functional vascular networks. This phenomenon, where tumour cells replace endothelial cells to form tubular structures, plays a pivotal role in tumour growth and metastasis.

The dissemination of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria by flies in hospitals is concerning as nosocomial AMR infections pose a significant threat to public health. This threat is compounded in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by several factors, including limited resources for sufficient infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and high numbers of flies in tropical climates. In this pilot study, 1,396 flies were collected between August and September 2022 from eight tertiary care hospitals in six cities (Abuja, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos and Sokoto) in Nigeria.
