Resistive switching in transition metal oxides involves intricate physical and chemical behaviours with potential for non-volatile memory and memristive devices. Although oxygen vacancy migration is known to play a crucial role in resistive switching of oxides, an in-depth understanding of oxygen vacancy-driven effects requires direct imaging of atomic-scale dynamic processes and their real-time impact on resistance changes. Here we use in situ transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate reversible switching between three resistance states in epitaxial LaSrMnO films. Simultaneous high-resolution imaging and resistance probing indicate that the switching events are caused by the formation of uniform structural phases. Reversible horizontal migration of oxygen vacancies within the manganite film, driven by combined effects of Joule heating and bias voltage, predominantly triggers the structural and resistive transitions. Our findings open prospects for ionotronic devices based on dynamic control of physical properties in complex oxide nanostructures.

Efficient charge separation at the semiconductor/cocatalyst interface is crucial for high-performance photoelectrodes, as it directly influences the availability of surface charges for solar water oxidation. However, establishing strong molecular-level connections between these interfaces to achieve superior interfacial quality presents significant challenges. This study introduces an innovative electrochemical etching method that generates a high concentration of oxygen vacancy sites on BiVO surfaces (Ov-BiVO), enabling interactions with the oxygen-rich ligands of MIL-101.

Smart metal-metal oxide heterointerface construction holds promising potentials to endow an efficient electron redistribution for electrochemical CO reduction reaction (CORR). However, inhibited by the intrinsic linear-scaling relationship, the binding energies of competitive intermediates will simultaneously change due to the shifts of electronic energy level, making it difficult to exclusively tailor the binding energies to target intermediates and the final CORR performance. Nonetheless, creating specific adsorption sites selective for target intermediates probably breaks the linear-scaling relationship.

The construction of strong metal-support interactions in oxide-supported noble metal nanocatalysts has been considered an emerging and efficient way in improving catalytic performance in biomass-upgrading reactions. Herein, a citric acid (CA)-assisted synthesized ZrO layer with improved oxygen vacancy (O) concentrations on a natural clay mineral of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was designed. Moreover, AuPd/ZrO@HNTs-zCA catalysts were prepared by loading AuPd bimetal and employed for aerobic oxidation of the lignocellulosic biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) platform to the bioplastic monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with water as the solvent.

Solid proton and oxide ion conductors have key applications in several hydrogen-based and energy-related technologies. Here, we report on the discovery of significant proton and oxide ion conductivity in palmierite oxides AVO (A = Sr, Ba), which crystallize with a framework of isolated tetrahedral VO units. We show that these systems present prevalent ionic conduction, with a large protonic component under humidified air ( ∼ 0.
