The enantiomers of praziquantel, the drug of choice in schistosomiasis, were separated by electrokinetic chromatography with cyclodextrins. Nine anionic cyclodextrins were screened for their ability to discriminate between the uncharged enantiomers. Seven investigated selectors presented chiral interactions with the enantiomers, these cases being interpreted in terms of stability constants and complex mobilities. The best results were delivered by sulfated-β-cyclodextrin, where quasi-equal stability constants were accompanied by extreme selectivity values and was explained on the basis of highly different mobilities of the transient diastereomeric complexes. Since the enantiomer migration order was unfavorable, a simple polarity switch was employed (detection end at anode), which apart from migration order reversal, also resulted in extreme resolution values (R > 35) and increased migration times. After optimization (50 mM phosphate buffer pH 2.0, supplied with 15 mM sulfated-β-cyclodextrin, 15 kV, capillary temperature 25°C, short-end injection with 50 mbar × 2 s), analysis time under 10 min were obtained, while still maintaining high resolution (R > 10). The method was validated according to the ICH guidelines and application of the method was tested on in-house synthetized R-praziquantel batches and on commercial, combination tablets containing racemic mixture of the drug.

Porphyrins bearing the unique 18π electron tetrapyrrolic macrocycles exhibit interesting photophysical and photochemical properties and have been considered as promising ligands for the construction of functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The combination of porphyrin-type ligands with lanthanide metals featured with diverse coordination environments to realize the novel functions as well as the diversity of the MOF is thus attractive but challenging. Herein, an unprecedented porphyrin-based samarium MOF (Sm-BCPP) composed of a 5,10-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,20-diphenyl porphyrin (HBCPP) ligand and samarium-formed one-dimensional clusters has been constructed via a solvothermal approach, and the synthesized Sm-BCPP has excellent chemical stabilities, exhibiting red luminescence.

The interaction between proteins and aroma compounds significantly impacts cheese flavor retention during processing. However, it is still unknown how cheese proteins and the aldehyde aroma compounds (AACs) interact. This study aims to clarify the interaction mechanisms between the AACs (benzaldehyde, 2-methylpropanal, 2-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanal) and β-casein (β-CN) using SPME-GC/MS, multi-spectroscopy techniques, and molecular dynamics simulations.

Auditory hair cells form precise and sensitive staircase-like actin protrusions known as stereocilia. These specialized microvilli detect deflections induced by sound through the activation of mechano-electrical transduction (MET) channels located at their tips. At rest, a small MET channel current results in a constant calcium influx which regulates the morphology of the actin cytoskeleton in the shorter 'transducing' stereocilia.

B,N-Embedded Helical Nanographenes Showing an Ion-Triggered Chiroptical Switching Function.

Intramolecular aromatic oxidative coupling of 3,6-bis(m-terphenyl-2'-yl)carbazole provided a bis(m-terphenyl)-fused carbazole, while that of 3,6-bis(m-terphenyl-2'-yl)-1,8-diphenylcarbazole afforded a bis(quaterphenyl)-fused carbazole. Borylation of the latter furnished a B,N-embedded helical nanographene binding a fluoride anion via a structural change from the three-coordinate boron to the four-coordinate boron. The anionic charge derived from the fluoride anion is stabilized over the expanded p-framework, which leads to the high binding constant (Ka) of 1 × 105 M-1.
