Background: The low rate of progression associated with the potential complications of thyroidectomy makes active surveillance an increasingly recommended management in low-risk papillary microcarcinomas of the thyroid (PMT). The objective of this study was to report the results of fine needle aspiration (FNA) of nodules ≤ 1 cm with highly suspicious appearance on ultrasonography (US) in patients who are potential candidates for active surveillance.
Methods: We revised thyroid nodules ≤ 1 cm with highly suspicious appearance on US in patients without known distant metastases, suspicion of extrathyroid extension, or suspicious lymph nodes on US. FNA was guided by US. All patients were referred for surgery, except for those with benign cytology (on two occasions).
Results: There were 181 patients with 198 nodules ≤ 1 cm that were highly suspicious and apparently restricted to the thyroid on US. Initial cytology was benign in 76 nodules (38.4%). Among these 76 nodules, repetition of FNA confirmed the benign nature in 59 (29.8%). Initial cytology was insufficient, indeterminate, suspicious of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and malignant (PTC) in 5, 15, 12, 9, and 80 nodules, respectively. FNA revealed medullary carcinoma in one patient. All 90 suspicious or malignant nodules were carcinomas on histology and 22 (81.4%) of the 27 nodules with indeterminate cytology were malignant.
Conclusions: FNA changed the "presumptive" diagnosis of PMT in 30% of nodules. Diagn. Cytopathol. 2017;45:294-296. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study developed antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from quinoa with high antibacterial activity and stability by mixed-bacteria fermentation. Furthermore, among 9 peptide fractions purified by membrane separation and chromatography, F1 could effectively inhibit the growth and propagation of bacterial microorganisms in apple juice. Subsequently, F1 identified LC-MS/MS as 95 peptides, molecular weights 494.

There has been huge interest among chemical scientists in the electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO) to ammonia (NH) due to the useful application of NH in nitrogen fertilizers and fuel. To conduct such a complex reduction reaction, which involves eight electrons and eight protons, one needs to develop high-performance (and stable) electrocatalysts that favor the formation of reaction intermediates that are selective toward ammonia production. In the present study, we developed and applied CoO/graphene nanoribbon (GNR) electrocatalysts with excellent properties for the effective reduction of NO to NH, where NH yield rate of 42.

Purpose: To describe the clinical characteristics of macular holes (MH) with an intact bacillary layer.
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the characteristics and surgical results of 23 eyes with MH and an intact bacillary layer, with or without rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Results: Among the 23 eyes, 11 had only MH, and 12 had concurrent fovea-off RRD.

Diverse analytical techniques are employed to scrutinize microplastics (MPs)─pervasive at hazardous concentrations across diverse sources ranging from water reservoirs to consumable substances. The limitations inherent in existing methods, such as their diminished detection capacities, render them inadequate for analyzing MPs of diminutive dimensions (microplastics: 1-5 μm; nanoplastics: < 1 μm). Consequently, there is an imperative need to devise methodologies that afford improved sensitivity and lower detection limits for analyzing these pollutants.

Background: Although total hip and total knee arthroplasty are highly successful operations, the decision of whether and when to undergo surgery is highly subjective and discretionary, and specific guidelines regarding readiness for surgery remain elusive. The nature of these decisions underscores the importance of shared decision-making, which is founded on the concept that patients substantially contribute to determining their own readiness for surgery. The OPTION survey was developed as a conversation aid to facilitate shared decision-making in the context of total joint arthroplasty.
