Objectives: To review the methods for verifying the needle position while performing epidural anaesthesia in dogs, and to discuss the advantages, disadvantages, usefulness and reliability of each technique in the experimental and clinical research setting.
Databases Used: PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Basel University Library online catalogues; the latter, which was provided by the University of Berne, were used as databases. The results were filtered manually based on the titles and abstracts in order to narrow the field.
Conclusions: Besides some drawbacks, including the potential side effects of contrast medium injection, which may limit its routine use in clinical patients, epidurography should still be regarded as one of the most reliable techniques to verify needle position in dogs. Ultrasonography, electrical nerve stimulation, loss of resistance and the hanging drop technique are regarded as less invasive than epidurography and, for this reason, their use may be more applicable to clinical patients. However, these methods have been described in only a few published reports, all of which involved a limited number of dogs. Finally, the detection of epidural pressure waves has been investigated more extensively in dogs, and the findings of these studies suggest that this technique may be used to verify epidural needle placement for experimental and clinical research, on condition that all the negative subjects are excluded from the study.

Objective: Early thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke within the therapeutic window is associated with improved clinical outcomes. This study investigated whether optimizing intravenous thrombolytic (IVT) therapy strategies for stroke could reduce treatment delays.
Methods: To reduce delays in IVT therapy for ischemic stroke, a series of quality improvement measures were implemented at a tertiary hospital in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, from June 2021 to August 2023, which included developing a timeline process management system, forming a nurse-led stroke process management team, providing homogeneous training, standardizing the IVT therapy process for ischemic stroke, and introducing an incentive policy.

Hirayama disease (HD) is a rare disorder characterized by insidious asymmetric neurogenic atrophy primarily involving the upper extremities. HD most commonly affects adolescent males and has a favorable prognosis for arrest of progression. Electrodiagnostic (EDX) studies show chronic denervation changes in the distal upper extremity muscles.

Objective: Due to the limited operating space in the magnetic resonance (MR) environment, there is coupled motion in the insertion mechanism, which not only reduces the flexibility of the robot but also challenges the insertion path planning. Meanwhile, the path planning is also restricted by the bending rule of the flexible needle, thus the bending model of the needle is also essentially built.
Approach: This paper proposes a path planner for the flexible needle based on both the coupled motion kinematics of the insertion robot and the bending model of the flexible needle.

Purpose: This paper outlines the commissioning of the Varian (VMS, Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) Universal Interstitial Cylinder (UIC) applicator set for Ir-192 HDR brachytherapy. The UIC was commissioned for use with CT and MRI and a custom phantom was designed to avoid the introduction of water-like materials into the needle guide tracks. Various marker strands were investigated to determine which allowed the most accurate reconstruction of source positions.

Background: Brain tumor needle biopsy interventions are inflicted with nondiagnostic or biased sampling in up to 25% and hemorrhage, including asymptomatic cases, in up to 60%. To identify diagnostic tissue and sites with increased microcirculation, intraoperative optical techniques have been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical implications of in situ optical guidance in frameless navigated tumor biopsies.
