Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare signs of dry eye between ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and healthy subjects.
Methods: Fifteen patients with UC (group 1) and 15 healthy subjects (group 2) were enrolled in this study. Tear volume measurement, Schirmer-I test with no anesthetic, tear break-up time, and conjunctival impression cytology (CIC) were evaluated in both groups.
Results: Patients with UC showed lower tear volumes when compared with healthy subjects (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in distribution of CIC grades between groups 1 and 2 (P<0.05). Tear break-up time and Schirmer-I measurements were significantly lower in group 1 compared with group 2 (P<0.05).
Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that UC is associated with demonstrable disturbances in tear function and conjunctival cytology.

In this article, the authors evaluate the applications of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination to impression cytology (IC) of the bulbar conjunctiva for the assessment of microvillar alteration as an early ultrastructural indicator of ocular surface health. This method offers several advantages, starting with its simplicity: it involves the non-invasive application of a strip of bibulous paper to the bulbar or tarsal conjunctiva.

Objective: The cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate the association of ocular surface inflammation with systemic conditions in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Methods: The study enrolled 30 SLE patients and 30 controls. Ocular symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire.
Bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is a significant cause of corneal blindness and is more difficult to treat, as compared with unilateral LSCD because no source of autologous limbal stem cells (LSCs) remains in these patients. Thus, bilateral patients could be candidates for treatment with allogeneic LSC transplants that require long-term systemic immunosuppression therapy. Thus, if possible, for the correct candidates, using autologous LSCs could be a preferred treatment.
