An ionic cobalt-PNP complex is developed for the efficient α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols for the first time. A broad range of ketone and alcohol substrates were employed, leading to the isolation of alkylated ketones with yields up to 98%. The method was successfully applied to the greener synthesis of quinoline derivatives while using 2-aminobenzyl alcohol as an alkylating reagent.

Entropy-Driven Ring-Opening Polymerisation represents an attractive mechanism to produce high-performance polymeric materials as it can be performed using neat, low-viscosity precursors and without the production of by-products or release of volatiles. Macrocyclic oligomers (MCOs) of polyether ketone ketone (PEKK) were synthesised and investigated as an method of forming this high-performance thermoplastic. Cyclic oligomers were successfully synthesised by pseudo-high dilution methods, and the reaction conditions were optimised through careful addition of starting materials and carbonate base selection.

In the shipbuilding industry, during the painting process, workers are exposed to various substances in paint, including organic solvents that can adversely affect their health. Most workplace exposures to organic solvents involve mixtures of organic compounds. Therefore, in this study, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were derived using data from the Workplace Environmental Monitoring Program in Korea for six organic solvents (xylene, n-butanol, ethylbenzene, isobutyl alcohol, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone [MIBK]) commonly used in the steel shipbuilding industry.

Importance: Although prolonged fasting has become increasingly popular, the favourable biological adaptations and possible adverse effects in humans have yet to be fully elucidated.
Objective: To investigate the effects of a three-day water-only fasting, with or without exercise-induced glycogen depletion, on autophagy activation and the molecular pathways involved in cellular damage accumulation and repair in healthy humans.
Design: A randomised, single-centre, two-period, two-sequence crossover trial.

Benzylic C-H oxidation to form carbonyl compounds, such as ketones, is a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis as it allows for the preparation of versatile intermediates. In this review, we highlight the synthesis of aromatic ketones via catalytic, electrochemical, and photochemical oxidation of alkylarenes using different catalysts and oxidants in the past 5 years. Additionally, we also discuss the synthesis of heterocyclic molecules using benzylic C-H oxidation as a key step.

Prostate cancer remains a significant global health concern, prompting ongoing exploration of novel therapeutic agents. Licochalcone A, a natural product in the chalcone family isolated from licorice root, is characterized by its enone structure and demonstrates antiproliferative activity in the micromolar range across various cell lines, including prostate cancer. Building on our prior success in enhancing curcumin's antiproliferative potency by replacing the substituted phenol with a 1-alkyl-1H-imizadol-2-yl moiety, we applied a similar approach to design a new class of licochalcone A-inspired chalcones.
