Hierarchically structured one-dimensional (1D) MoO is synthesized for the first time in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([BMIM][TfN]). The synthesis system is very simple (single [BMIM][TfN] solvent plus MoO(acac) reactant). [BMIM][TfN] itself works as both the reaction medium and the template for the formation of these interesting 1D MoO particles with ultrathin nanosheet subunits. The as-synthesized hierarchically 1D MoO_ particles exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity with good long-term cycle stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media. The HER activity of present synthesized MoO is comparable to those of the most active Mo-based electrocatalysts in acid media reported up to now. Therefore, the ionic liquid route provides us with a newly powerful tool for the synthesis of interesting alternative to noble metal catalysts for efficient electrocatalytic production of hydrogen in acidic environment.

Ice-Confined Synthesis of Stacked Polymer Nanospheres as Osmotic Power Generation Membranes.

Osmotic power extracts electricity from salinity gradients and provides a viable route toward clean energy. To improve the energy conversion efficiency, common strategies rely on fabricating precisely controlled nanopores to meet the requirements of high ionic conductivity and selectivity. We report ion transport through the free-volume networks in stacked polymer nanospheres for osmotic power harvesting.

Cavity correlations and the onset of charge ordering at charged interfaces: A modified Poisson-Fermi approach.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Instituto de Física, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, 35400-000 Ouro Preto, MG, Brazil.

Charge layering in the close vicinity of charged interfaces is a well-known effect, extensively reported in both experiments and simulations of Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) and concentrated electrolytes. The traditional Poisson-Fermi (PF) theory is able to successfully describe overcrowding effects but fails to reproduce charge ordering even in strong coupling regimes. Simple models, yet capable of investigating the interplay between these important interfacial phenomena, are still lacking.

The current intense study of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals was initiated by the observation of the same ferroelectric nematic phase in two independently discovered organic, rod-shaped, mesogenic compounds, RM734 and DIO. We recently reported that the compound RM734 also exhibits a monotropic, low-temperature, apolar phase having reentrant isotropic symmetry (the I phase), the formation of which is facilitated to a remarkable degree by doping with small (below 1%) amounts of the ionic liquid BMIM-PF. Here we report similar phenomenology in DIO, showing that this reentrant isotropic behavior is not only a property of RM734 but is rather a more general, material-independent feature of ferroelectric nematic mesogens.
