The aim of this study was to estimate the benchmark dose (BMD) as the threshold limit level of the cadmium (Cd) concentration in rice for itai-itai disease and/or suspected disease; it was based on the data that previously evaluated the association for such diseases with the Cd concentration in rice by using a logistic regression model. From 1971 to 1976, a total of 2446 rice samples were analyzed across the 88 hamlets in the Jinzu river basin. The mean Cd concentration in rice in each hamlet was used as the index of external Cd exposure of the entire population of the hamlet. We employed the incidence of itai-itai disease and/or suspected disease obtained from the available 55 hamlets. As the threshold, the lower limit of the BMD (BMDL) of the Cd concentration in rice for itai-itai disease and/or suspected disease was estimated using a logistic model, setting the benchmark response at 1% or 2%. The estimated BMDLs of the Cd concentration in rice for itai-itai disease and/or suspected disease were 0.62-0.76 and 0.27-0.56 mg kg in men and women, respectively. The lowest BMDL was 0.27 mg kg in women. In the present study, the threshold limit level of the Cd concentration in rice for itai-itai disease, which is the most severe form of chronic Cd poisoning, was estimated for the first time. This result provides important information about the worldwide standard for the Cd concentration in rice. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Gram-positive bacteria pose significant threats to human health, necessitating the development of targeted bacterial detection and eradication strategies. Nevertheless, current approaches often suffer from poor targeting specificity. Herein, the study utilizes purple rice lixivium to synthesize biomass carbon dots (termed BCDs) with wheat germ agglutinin-like residues for precisely targeting Gram-positive bacteria.

The integration of dual-mesoporous structures, the construction of heterojunctions, and the incorporation of highly concentrated oxygen vacancies are pivotal for advancing metal oxide-based gas sensors. Nonetheless, achieving an optimal design that simultaneously combines mesoporous structures, precise heterojunction modulation, and controlled oxygen vacancies through a one-step process remains challenging. This study proposes an innovative method for fabricating zinc stannate semiconductors featuring dual-mesoporous structures and tunable oxygen vacancies via a direct solution precursor plasma spray technique.

This study assessed the effects of fenobucarb (F) (1%, 10%, and 20% of the LC-96h value) on the brain cholinesterase (AChE) activity, food intake (FI), feed conversion rate (FCR), and growth of silver barb (, Bleeker, 1849). It also assessed the AChE inhibition levels that cause the abnormal swimming, behavior, and mortality of silver barb and how the feeding regime affects the recovery rate of the AChE activity. The results showed that the brain AChE inhibition increased with the F concentrations.

Puberulic acid (PA) is a mycotoxin produced by a species of . It has received widespread attention as a significant contributor to the reported fatalities associated with red yeast rice dietary supplements. However, the detection of PA, especially at low concentration levels, poses a considerable challenge, with no detection methods reported thus far.

To expand the applications of hydrophobic silica aerogels derived from rice husk ash (HSA) through simple traditional methods (without adding special materials or processes), this paper employs machine learning to establish mathematical models to identify optimal conditions for extracting water glass and investigates how preparation conditions and heat treatment temperatures affect properties such as the porosity and hydrophobicity of HSA. The results indicate that the decision tree regression model provides the most accurate predictions for the extraction rate and modulus of water glass. Notably, the water contact angle of HSA produced using nitric acid as a catalyst can reach as high as 159.
