A rare case of multiple (over 60) renal adenomas in a 24-year-old patient is described; the adenomas developed against the background of the hydronephrotic transformation resulting from the stenosis of the ureteropelvic segment.

Background: Kidney depth significantly affects the accuracy of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measurement, and hydronephrosis-induced morphological changes further challenge its estimation through traditional formulas. This study evaluated the rotation method's efficacy in correcting kidney depth and depth difference during Tc-99m diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) renal dynamic imaging for GFR assessment.

Methods: This study analyzed 66 individuals treated at First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University with unilateral hydronephrosis between January 2022 and June 2023.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma in kidneys with developmental anomalies - a report of two cases.

BMC Urol

November 2024

Department of Urology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary mucinous adenocarcinomas of the kidney are rare and their origins are unclear, with theories including chronic irritation and kidney maldevelopment.
  • Two cases are presented: one involving a 50-year-old male with a duplex collecting system who had invasive mucinous carcinoma, and another case with a 53-year-old male who had a horseshoe kidney and recurrent mucinous adenocarcinoma after previous surgery.
  • Both cases highlight the association between mucinous adenocarcinomas and kidney anomalies, emphasizing the importance of histopathology for diagnosis.

Background: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the most common cause of antenatal hydronephrosis. Although majority of them improve with time, none of the existing diagnostic modalities can accurately predict which hydronephrotic kidney is at the risk of progressive renal damage and will benefit from early surgery. Postural variations in the anteroposterior pelvic diameter (APPD) of the hydronephrotic kidney in children during follow-up postnatal ultrasonography (USG) reflect the intrapelvic tension, which might help in predicting the need of surgery amongst these patients.

Background And Objective: Hydronephrosis is essential in the diagnosis of renal colic. We automated the detection of hydronephrosis from ultrasound images to standardize the therapy and reduce the misdiagnosis of renal colic.

Methods: Anonymously collected ultrasound images of human kidneys, both normal and hydronephrotic, were preprocessed for neural networks.

Background: Physiological PSMA expression in the cells of the proximal renal tubules and consecutive radiopharmaceutical binding and retention could potentially lead to radioligand-therapy-induced nephrotoxicity. Thus, patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer undergo Tc-Mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) renal scintigraphy to assess kidney function and to exclude renal obstruction as part of their workup for PSMA-targeted radioligand therapy (RLT). Tc-MAG-3 renal scintigraphy often requires an additional visit to the nuclear medicine department and patients spend 30-90 min in the department, which is inconvenient and takes up camera time.
