Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) is a leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia, with infants and the elderly exhibiting significant susceptibility to the development of severe disease. A growing body of evidence supports the ability of Spn to negatively regulate the host response to infection, e.g. the capacity to induce death in numerous cell types. However, our understanding of the ability of Spn to directly impact lymphocytes remains limited. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that lymphocyte type and activation state influences the susceptibility to pneumococcus-mediated death. We show that in the resting state, CD4+ T cells exhibit a modestly increased susceptibility to Spn-induced death compared to CD8+ T cells or NK cells. In the presence of activating stimuli, the situation most reflective of what would occur in vivo during infection, all subsets demonstrated a significant increase in sensitivity to Spn-mediated death. Importantly, the activated subsets diverged dramatically in susceptibility with natural killer cells exhibiting an 8.6-fold greater sensitivity to pneumococcal components compared to the T-cell subsets. These results significantly expand our understanding of the capacity for pneumococcus to negatively regulate lymphocytes.

Emotional flexibility refers to an individual's ability to change emotional responses in constantly changing environments to adapt to different situations. This study aims to use the Emotional Switching Task (EST) paradigm, combined with Electroencephalogram (EEG) technology and behavioral experiments, to explore the impact of emotional valence shift directions and preparation effects on the switching cost of emotional flexibility. The results found that when individuals switch from positive emotional valence to positive emotional valence, the switching cost is smaller than other transition directions.

Background: Difficulties with speech-in-noise perception in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be associated with impaired analysis of speech sounds, such as vowels, which represent the fundamental phoneme constituents of human speech. Vowels elicit early (< 100 ms) sustained processing negativity (SPN) in the auditory cortex that reflects the detection of an acoustic pattern based on the presence of formant structure and/or periodic envelope information (f0) and its transformation into an auditory "object".
Methods: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and individual brain models to investigate whether SPN is altered in children with ASD and whether this deficit is associated with impairment in their ability to perceive speech in the background of noise.

Using chromosomal barcoding, we observed that >97% of the Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) population turns over in the lung within 2 days post-inoculation in a murine model. This marked collapse of diversity and bacterial turnover was associated with acute inflammation (severe pneumococcal pneumonia), high bacterial numbers in the lungs, bacteremia, and mortality. Intra-strain competition mediated by the blp locus, which expresses bacteriocins in a quorum-sensing-dependent manner, was required for each of these effects.
