Mechanical injury to soft tissues and bones of the lower limbs may be complicated by thrombosis and oedema. Treatment of posttraumatic oedema in the lower limbs can be difficult and protracted and rarely leads to complete recovery. The pathogenesis of posttraumatic oedema has not been fully elucidated. This paper presents the aetiopathogenesis of posttraumatic oedema in the lower limbs and a review of relevant literature in English and Polish of the last 5 years, describing therapy outcomes and potential perspectives for develop ment.

Context: This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of early surgical excision of the traumatic myositis ossificans of the vastus intermedius muscle in an elite football player and return to sports activity within 3 months from the initial injury.
Case Presentation: A 27-year-old male professional football player presented with progressive pain and loss of range of motion after sustaining a severe, right quadriceps contusion 4 weeks earlier. After unsuccessful conservative therapy, the differential diagnosis of myositis ossificans was suspected and confirmed on radiographic examination.

Cerebral edema is associated with poor prognosis because brain swelling within the rigid skull raises intracranial pressure, exacerbating secondary injuries following traumatic brain injury. Brain swelling can be characterized by triphasic biomechanics, which models brain tissue as a mixture of a deformable porous solid matrix with a negative fixed-charged density (FCD), water, and monovalent counterions. When brain cells die, the intracellular FCD is exposed, attracting cations into the cells.

Rationale: The occurrence of delayed Horner's syndrome caused by a dog bite to the neck is rarely reported. Acute stress disorder (ASD) can easily be neglected when diagnosing this disease in trauma patients who cannot be effectively observed. Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition for which effective neuroregenerative and neuroreparative strategies are lacking. The post-traumatic disruption of the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) as part of the neurovascular unit (NVU) is one major factor in the complex pathophysiology of SCI, which is associated with edema, inflammation, and cell death in the penumbra regions of the spinal cord adjacent to the lesion epicenter. Thus, the preservation of an intact NVU and vascular integrity to facilitate the regenerative capacity following SCI is a desirable therapeutic target.
