We recently described the activity of miR1514a in response to water deficit in Phaseolus vulgaris. Pvu-miR1514a targets a NAC transcription factor mRNA for cleavage and subsequently triggers NAC-derived phasiRNA formation. Here we show that accumulation and activity of miR1514a are also conserved in the model legume Medicago truncatula. Consistently, we identified Mtr-miR1514a and detected its increased accumulation in response to stress conditions, targeting a NAC TF mRNA for cleavage and triggering phasiRNA production. In P. vulgaris, miR1514a inhibition in transgenic hairy roots was reported to increase NAC 700 mRNA levels and to affect expression patterns of several genes, including that of a Sec 14 homolog. We report here that in adult plant roots exposed to dehydration conditions, where miR1514a levels increased and NAC 700 mRNA decreased, there was a reduction of Sec 14 homolog mRNA levels, suggesting a direct transcriptional effect. The functions of miR1514a, NAC 700 and derived phasiRNAs have just begun to be elucidated in common bean; future understanding of their activities in this and other legumes species will advance our knowledge of microRNA functions in plants.

A novel method for the concurrent introduction of fluorine and bromine into the surface of nanoporous activated carbon (NAC) is evaluated. According to the method, the preheated NAC was treated with 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane at elevated temperatures (400-800 °C). Potentiometric and elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and F solid-state NMR were used to study the NAC microstructure and changes in surface chemistry.

Despite consensus guidelines, most patients with early-stage triple-negative (TN) and HER2-positive (HER2+) breast cancer do not see a medical oncologist prior to surgery and do not receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). To understand barriers to care, we aimed to characterize the relationship between geography (region of residence and cancer centre proximity) and receipt of a pre-treatment medical oncology consultation and NAC for patients with TN and HER2+ breast cancer. Using linked administrative datasets in Ontario, Canada, we performed a retrospective population-based analysis of women diagnosed with stage I-III TN or HER2+ breast cancer from 2012 to 2020.

Drugs with poor water and lipid solubility are termed "brick dust." We previously successfully developed a co-amorphous system of a novel neuropeptide Y receptor antagonist (AntiYR), a brick dust molecule, using sodium taurocholate (NaTC) as a co-former. However, the maximum improvement in AntiYR dissolution by the co-amorphous system was only approximately 10 times greater than that of the crystals.

Background: Alcohol (AC) and nonalcohol-associated cirrhosis (NAC) epidemiology studies are limited by available case definitions. We compared the diagnostic accuracy of previous and newly developed case definitions to identify AC and NAC hospitalizations.
Methods: We randomly selected 700 hospitalizations from the 2008 to 2022 Canadian Discharge Abstract Database with alcohol-associated and cirrhosis-related International Classification of Diseases 10th revision codes.
