Purpose: Equal level trauma centers in the same country might have significant differences regarding their demographics and types of trauma. Understanding geographic variations in injury patterns are essential for optimal care. In this article, we present an exceptionally rare and challenging clinical case. It concerns a 65-year-old woman who, while eating, accidentally ingested a thorn. This foreign body, after being swallowed, migrated from the proximal esophagus, until it penetrated the left internal jugular vein.

Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies frequently necessitates emergency department visits, with many cases requiring surgical consultation. Although most ingested items pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, orthodontic components, such as wires, present a specific risk due to their shape and material properties. This report describes a rare case of a 13-year-old male adolescent whose initial presentation suggested ingestion of a chicken bone.

Alkali caustic exposures can occur in the workplace with industrial chemicals, or in the home with common household products. These exposures, whether accidental or intentional, create risk for death or acute injury, such as airway compromise and esophageal or gastric perforation, as well as long-term complications such as stricture formation. Swift diagnosis and grading of these injuries will guide management options and are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality in these patients.
