Post-pneumonectomy air leak and severe respiratory failure of the non-operated lung is considered to be a life-threatening complication of lung surgery. We present the case report of a 68-year-old man who underwent a right pneumonectomy for spinocellular carcinoma. Refractory respiratory failure occurred following bronchial stump air leakage and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) of the non-operated lung. Established veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) was utilized to maintain tissue oxygenation while re-do surgery was performed. The leaking bronchial stump was closed with an azygos vein patch and, subsequently, weaning off ECMO was accomplished 7 days later. The patient fully recovered and he is limited only by mild exertional dyspnea at 24 months follow-up after the initial surgery.

Background: The effect of different surgical methods on postoperative lung function in patients with lung cancer is still inconclusive. The main objective of this study was to compare the effects of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy and segmentectomy on postoperative pulmonary function and compensatory changes in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery.
Methods: A total of 120 patients (82 VATS lobectomy, 38 VATS segmentectomy) were assessed for demographic characteristics, baseline pulmonary function, tumor volume, T stage, and histological grade.

Although a growing body of evidence emphasizes the superiority of VATS over conventional thoracotomy, little is still known about early postoperative diaphragm muscle function after lobectomy via these two approaches. To fill the gap in existing literature, we conducted a comparative study between VATS and conventional thoracotomy in terms of postoperative diaphragm muscle function, assessing its contractility, strength, the magnitude of effort and potential risk of dysfunction such as atrophy and paralysis. A total of 59 patients (30 after VATS), who underwent anatomical pulmonary resection at our institution, were enrolled in this study.

Objectives: To investigate differences in lung cancer (LC) management and survival using data from European population cancer registries.
Methods: We analysed 4,602 lung cancer cases diagnosed in 2010-2013, followed-up to 2019 in five countries. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate the Odds Ratio (OR) of surgery for stages I-II LC or chemo- or radiotherapy for stages III-IV LC.

Most animal models of CWD created postnatally were not evaluated for respiratory function.
