Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with scoliosis experience dysfunction in muscle recruitment, particularly during everyday activities like walking and stair climbing, highlighting a gap in current research on muscle characteristics in these patients.
  • The study aims to compare muscle activity patterns between scoliosis patients and healthy individuals to improve assessment and rehabilitation treatment plans.
  • Using surface electromyography (sEMG) to measure muscle activation, the research found that scoliosis patients display significant differences in movement patterns and muscle activation during walking and stair climbing compared to controls.

Noradrenergic modulation of saccades in Parkinson's disease.

Brain Commun

Brain and Mind Centre and School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney, Sydney 2050, Australia.

Noradrenaline is a powerful modulator of cognitive processes, including action decisions underlying saccadic control. Changes in saccadic eye movements are common across neurodegenerative diseases of ageing, including Parkinson's disease. With growing interest in noradrenergic treatment potential for non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, the temporal precision of oculomotor function is advantageous to assess the effects of this modulation.

A 35-year-old woman with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension underwent open hemicolectomy with cholecystectomy under combined general and epidural anaesthesia. Intra-operative pulmonary artery pressure, as measured by Swan-Ganz catheter, was suprasystemic and managed with inodilators. She developed postoperative right ventricular dysfunction requiring inotropes, incremental pulmonary vasodilators and prolonged oxygen supplementation.

Acute aortic dissection type A during cardiac catheterization has been reported as a rare but fatal complication. We present a case of acute aortic dissection type A occurring during catheter manipulation in the ascending aorta during mapping of ventricular premature contraction via the retrograde approach. In the present case, transthoracic echocardiography showed no pericardial effusion and no flap of the aorta, but intracardiac echo clearly showed the flap.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates coronary artery calcification (CAC) and dilation of the thoracic aorta in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), finding these conditions have a higher prevalence of these cardiovascular issues compared to healthy controls.
  • - It involved 151 IIM patients, 140 SLE patients, and 195 controls, using chest CT scans to measure CAC and thoracic aorta sizes, assessing relationships with cardiovascular risk factors through various statistical tests.
  • - Results show aging is a consistent risk factor for both CAC and aorta dilation, with specific associations found in IIM and SLE patients, suggesting AA/DA dilation could be a useful early cardiovascular disease
