Annexins form a family of membrane- and calcium-binding proteins, widely distributed in vertebrates. Their interactions with membranes are regulated by changes of intracellular concentration of calcium ([Ca]), pH, and the presence of negatively charged phospholipids as well as cholesterol in membranes. As protein participating in membrane fusion and sensors of a [Ca] Annexins may regulate various signaling pathways including patways involving protein kinase C (PKC isoforms. They also particpate in membrane repair mechanisms (along with actin cytoskeleton and S100 protein), in the vesicular transport (cholesterol enriched domains) as well in in intracellular calcium homeostasis and regulation of mitochondrial function and mitochondrial network structure. The last possibility is a topic of present review commemorating 90th Birthday of Professor Lech Wojtczak.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the occurrence and development of HCC remains unclear. We are interested in the function of m6A methylation enzyme WTAP in the occurrence and development of HCC.

Article Synopsis
  • Irinotecan (CPT-11) is a chemotherapy drug that can harm healthy cells while treating cancer, while Nimotuzumab (NmAb) is a monoclonal antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in cancers with EGFR overexpression.
  • This study examines how the combination of CPT-11 and NmAb affects HeLa cervical cancer cells, finding that the combination leads to more cell death and apoptosis compared to either treatment alone.
  • The combined treatment increases levels of reactive oxygen species and activates key proteins involved in cell stress and death, suggesting that NmAb enhances the cancer-fighting effects of CPT-11 and could improve treatment for cervical cancer in humans.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor that is currently incurable, highlighting the need for new treatment options.
  • This study explored the effects of fingolimod, a drug known for its anti-cancer properties, on C6 rat brain cancer cells using various tests to assess cell survival, proliferation, and apoptosis.
  • Results showed that fingolimod significantly reduced cell survival and tumor growth in rats, indicating that it may work by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in GBM cells.

Background: Pyropheophorbide-α methyl ester-mediated photodynamic therapy(MPPa-PDT) is a candidate treatment for solid tumors, including osteosarcoma. Pyroptosis has garnered significant attention in cancer research due to its pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory nature. This study investigated the mechanism and role of MPPa-PDT-induced pyroptosis in osteosarcoma cells.
